Great elk round congrats!

140 Barnes would have made two holes each.

You didn't kill it enough.
Use a different bullet next time.
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

I saw a doe last week that was taken by a 140 accubond and was drt. I may have to think about them replacing my 140 ballistics.

I'd say that is some great performance! I wouldn't. No exit wound, even on a soft broadside shot and lost 40% of its weight. Sure the Elk is dead, but that is attributable to good shooting and good shot presentation. The bullet did what it was asked to do in this case, but was not asked to do very much. Lots of bullets work fine when the conditions are in their favor, no proof of a great bullet. Only an adequate one for that set of circumstances. No more.

It is pretty well known that accubonds are designed to lose a good portion of weight (like their big brother, the partition) Looking at the pictures, the bullets look very "partition-like". With the rounded front mushroom (no sharp edges or petals), I am not surprised they did not exit. I am sure after passing through the boiler room of the animal at that distance, with the rounded edges (no cutting petals like a TSX) the hide on the off-side would not have a difficult time catching them. There is some stretch to the hide. Of course, that does not really mean that they would not penetrate sufficiently on bad angle shots, only that you may not always get two holes.

Obviously you shot well, and the bullets did what you needed them to do, as expected. Congrats on your success.

140 Barnes would have made two holes each. . . . . . . . . . with the same end result - - - - one dead elk.

Do elk have a rear shoulder? I know, I know. I just grew up to my Dad and Grandpa's telling me to shoot them right behind the front shoulder, and old habits die hard.

Cool.
Thanks for the report.
I'm gonna give them a whirl in my 7mmRemMag. I had some other stuff I needed that I couldn't find locally....put 2 boxes of 160gr Accubond (Federal factory ammo) on the order, too.
Come on UPS!
I'll get the gun zeroed with them and see how it goes in the woods.

140 Barnes would have made two holes each. So would the 7mm 120's. BTDT, and you can start them much faster than one can get trying to push a 140 anything. BIL just knowcked one through a black bear a couple of weeks ago. Gimme two holes, every time, every day. When the time comes to track something, that second hole is really important. Can't always count on a DRT or dead in plain sight.

Glad to see that as I'l likely be using 150g AB's in a .30-06 come this Thursday, the only load I've worked up for thtparticular rifle. The .300WM that is going along will be getting 180g MRX.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
