I'm considering rebarreling one of my 84Ls. The goal is to add 6-8 oz to the gun. Mine weighs 6.5 lbs with Leup VX-3 and Talley's. I'd like it to finish at 7 lbs with scope and mounts.

Anyone know how much a 24" 84L barrel weighs and/or rebarrel one to accomplish the same goal?

You'll probably get a good answer, if not, I'll have a close estimate soon. My 84M is off getting rebarreled and I can weigh it when it gets back. Receiver, bolt and barrel of the 84M weighs 3lbs. That's with a Ti bolt handle. New barrel will be slightly longer and ever so slightly larger (.58" vs. .56").

Bill, it's my understanding re-barreling to the Lilja 84M Mod contour (obviously they can cook up an 84L Modified too) adds around 4 oz's. Darrik here at the fire came up with that in conjunction with Lilja, and it tapers from the same shank contour to .618" @ 22", which will be around .600 at 24". The point of doing it with those specs was to avoid having to open up the barrel channel. That's certainly and option if you want a heavier contour, it's just more of a hassle and expense. Obviously PacNor can plug the Lilja numbers in their CNC and do the job start to finish.

I'm eventually going to do that with at least one of my MT's...

Montana take off barrel, 22" length, chambered .243Win, weighs 33ozs on my scale.

Will do. Pac Nor is doing everything. They've had it a week or so, may be another couple months. Estimate is 8-10 weeks.

I'm walking a fine line of adding a little forward stability to a rifle with an overall weight I really like. Worst thing I can do is add too much weight. I'm hoping for a couple ounces, primarily towards the muzzle. We'll see how it turns out. Would have been happy leaving as-is, but saw it as an opportunity to try a slight, very slight, mod.

Just weighed a few 84M MT barrels laying around:

257 Rob: 2 lb 0.1 oz's.
7-08 Rem: 1 lb 14.7 oz's.
308 Win: 1 lb 14.5 oz's.

Brad, sticking with the 338 Fed. New barrel is not necessary, but something to play with. Existing one shot a few things exceptionally well, most reasonably well and a couple exceptionally poorly, or at least inconsistently. I've found I pick this rifle for everything so why not give it nice match barrel. If the plan works it will shoot 180 Accubonds well in the low 2800s.

Weights are good to know. According to the Pac-Nor calculator the 22" factory .338 barrel should be 1lb 11oz. That seems reasonably accurate, possibly an ounce or so lighter than reality. New barrel should be between 2 and 3 ounces heavier. That will put me at 6lb or just a tick over.

Paul, I'm considering doing the same with my 308. It shoots certain bullets in the .6's, others not so well. I'd like to have the throat done to seat a 165 NAB touching the lands at 2.835" instead of the usual massive jump to the lands. Like you, I'd also like a bit more weight in the barrel. To me, a MT that is .600" to .620" at 22" would be perfect.

I didn't specify a throat to a bullet, but that's not a bad idea. Having it about .020 off at safe mag length (I use 2.815) would be nice. I may have to play with some ogive lengths tonight. I doubt they've chambered it yet. My challenge is picking bullets. So many great bullets, so few hunting seasons! I have hundreds of 180 ABs, 180 BTs, 200 ABs, 200 Hot Cors, 200 E-Tips and 210 Partitions and then a couple hundred 160 and 185 TTSXs and a random smattering of others.

My thought is if you pick a pointy boattail with an ogive like the NBT/NAB, you'll be pretty safe with most everything else.

I'll compare 180/200 AB, 200 E-Tip and 185 TTSX. Those are my worst case scenarios.
