Deer season is closed now and the hunter is gone, so I'm back in the "pecan predator control" business. In my seat at 7:06 with the CZ in hand and 2 minutes later hear one fussing. Couldn't nail it down--left my hearing aid at home and it is tough trying to get a line on sounds with only one working ear! But, finally saw the tail shaking--about 30 yds away up in a pecan tree. Bang!--missed. Squirrel jumped to the main trunk and peeked around--bad move. Bang, flop. 3 minutes later I hear another one, across the creek. It starts moving and turns toward me and crosses the creek and gives me a shot--bang-miss It doesn't move so I shoot again-bang, flop. 5 minutes later I see one high and hard to my left and I swivel and move the shooting sticks--bang flop. 2 minutes later there is another one coming down the same limb and it stops at the same spot--bang-flop. That makes 4 down in less than 15 minutes, so I decide to move back towards the truck. Go to pick up the 4 and can't find one of them. Some blood at the base of the tree, but nothing doing, and it hit the ground hard with a solid thump. Oh well, head to the west and about 3 minutes later see one up top about 75 yds out. I cut to the left to put a tree between us, and sneak up to about 25 yds and get set. Squirrel is nowhere to be seen, but after about 5 minutes there it is--bang, flop.

Walk over and pick him up and put him on the stringer, then head on back towards the truck. Set up one more time and in about 5 minutes, there's one across the creek. It makes a mistake and gives me a shot--bang, flop. So, I gather it up and put it on the stringer and call it a morning.

But, the rest of the story is that I just had to help a buddy out with the overpopulation of crappie in his tank (that's a pond to you non-Texans). 20 minutes after I wet a line, I had this stringer, and the makings of a great supper. All in all a great day, even if I had to do leaves and clean the roof at home.

That was a day well-spent.

Squirrels are fun but man nothing like crappie fishing. Looks like a great day.

FieldGrade--your comment about no snow made me chuckle for sure. My wife would love to spend a month in the mountains in winter--me? No Way! This south-central Texas weather suits me just fine.
