I've had these words said to my by an African PH I was considering booking with. I didn't. I've read them on the internet countless times. The thing is I've used these two rounds for years and have never been able to tell a difference in killing power between the .270 and the .30-06. I'm not saying there isn't a noticeable difference, I'm just saying I've not been able to notice it.
Question is, is there a real world difference in performance on game by these rather similar rounds? I know lots of people compare the .270 130 to the .30-06 180 but I think the .270 150 evens the playing field. What say you?

Ya, popcorn and a safety belt and hang on. Looks like another 243 bs moose thread. Actually a 308 Win and 165 TTSX works better than either.

I don't know much about killing Africa game, but I'm sure one can kill quite a few head with the .270 loaded with 140 or 150gr Partitions or a TTSX option.
Now, on animals that might want to kill or eat ME, the .270 or 30-06 would not make my short list of cartridges....

I love and shoot both cartridges but if I were going to Africa, I'd take my .30-06.

I personally like the '06 better, but am positive that a good quality 150 gr. bullet in a .270 would work on plains game just fine...
Bottom line, use what you are most comfortable with.....you will do well...

No finger pointing, or offense meant. Is the PH hoping to error on the side of bullet weight and extra diameter in case the shooter is not up to the task? Just me, but I would call back and ask him about the 7x57. If he says it is o.k. then ask what loads? If he suggests anything less than 160 grains you would have leverage on him as the 270 will push them faster.  .270...... "Darn good coyote round" though.

I agree with you as that is what I took as my second rifle a 270 win with 150gr Hornady's over RL22.

A lot of African game has been taken with 7x57s, and the .270 Win has only 5% (negligible) less frontal area in the bullet.
On the other hand, a .308" bullet has 24% more frontal area than a .277" bullet, which means that you have a 24% larger hole, all else being equal. A larger hole can mean a better blood trail. JJHack has written about that several times on this site. If you wanted less recoil than a .30-06, a .308 Win would be a good option for the same diameter bullet (assuming .308 Win is legal where you are hunting and flying through).
Bottom line is if you and the PH can't see eye to eye on this issue (i.e., you don't believe the PH or trust him in this issue), then you're better off going with another PH.

Thus, anything lighter than a 175 grain 7x57 load could be matched in a .270 Win, and somebody (possibly Woodleigh?) probably makes a .277" bullet heavier than 160 grains, too.

Depending on where you're going in Africa, some places such as Zimbabwe have minimums for Class B and C game as listed below. A 30-06 with certain loadings can make the legal minimum whereas the 270 would be on the light side. Could this be what the PH referenced?
Zimbabwe
� Class A Game
5300 Joule
Minimum caliber 9.2mm in diameter
(Elephant, Hippo, Buffalo)
� Class B Game
4300 Joule
Minimum caliber 7.0mm in diameter
(Lion, Giraffe, Eland)
� Class C Game

Minimum caliber 7.0mm in diameter
(Leopard, Crocodile, Kudu, Oryx / Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Zebra, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Waterbuck, Tsessebe, etc.)

I don't know how the Zimbabweans measure for their minimum caliber regulations (bullet diameter vs. diameter at the lands vs. diameter at the grooves), but a .277" bullet measures 7.04 mm.

Slight off-topic question - doesn't the 4300 Joule minimum for Class B game rule out the .30-06?
Looks like a .270 WSM and 7mm Rem Mag might meet the minimum depending on the specific load, but non-magnums in .30-cal and under need not apply.

30-06 is a better pick 150gr - 220 gr brings more to the table than a .270

Maybe when comparing store-bought ammo...but with hand loads and modern firearms, can't the old warhorse be stepped up to some pretty impressive numbers?
