I haven't seen a thread about the M-6s. Yes, there was one I know of about 760s. In 1981 Rem. introduced the M-4,7400, auto & M-6 pump along w/7600. I still have the '81 Rem gun and cartridge catalog. There was ONLY $20. difference yet they didn't sell enough M-6s to justify continuing production.

The M-6 was only a cosmetic upgrade of the 7600 but for $20. you got a much PRETTIER forearm & butt stock. Also in the bottom of the receiver, in front of the clip, the case head of the cartridge was embedded, indicating caliber.

The M-6 was SLICK looking for those who like pump action rifles. I had had a few 760s but the M-6 was/is EYE CANDY for a pump. I also like the larger locking lugs of the bolt (don't know if there is any REAL improvement, but looked like there could be).

Having grown up shooting a pump shotgun it was a NATURAL step to a pump rifle. I never had one (760 or M-6) that RATTLED as some have reported. I know a guy who had a 760 that rattled, IF you held the forearm & pistol grip and twisted in opposite directions. ( don't know why you would do that in a hunting situation).

I have only let one M-6 get away from me. It was an 06 with a horrible trigger. I had another 06 at the time so I didn't get a trigger job done to the M-6. NOW I wish I had kept it. You can occasionally find a M-6 at gun shows but it's hard to find one in really good appearance.

I have found the pumps to be AS accurate as the normal production run bolt rifles. I currently have 6mm, 270, & 06 calibers. They are fun to hunt and a VERY natural action to cycle when firing.

Are there others out there who have and appreciate the M-6s or am I in a small minority (about guns) on this subject too.

Too flashy, in my eyes. Never saw the point to 'em.

rs: Yep, eye candy! If you remember in the 70s the California stocks were still in vogue. My opinion is Ruger had a lot to do with LESS FLASHY guns/stocks. Weatherby, Colt Sauer,& Kleingunther were leading the parade. Rem. & Win (remember the 70's win. stocks? ugh) had already begun immitating them.

I have more than one style of rifle/stocks and use them all. From oem Rem 700s, M6s, Win. Winlite, Wincam & Tikka T3 lite ss. I enjoy hunting a rifle that WORKS whether it's PRETTY or camo. Variety is good.

The 7600s had the same big locking lugs as the Model 6, and cost less, so I'd imagine the Amish Machinegun crowd preferred the 7600s to the flashier 6.

I was at Ft. Bragg at that time, and that crowd didn't buy pump rifles anyway, nor did the home folks back in Missouri, so I didn't see many, if any, in the woods. The ONLY time I've seen one being used, a guy was having trouble sighting his in, at the Rod and Gun Club there on Bragg. I looked at it a little,, noticed that the rear base windage screw was loose, tightened it up, and got it zeroed for him, sending him away with a smile. I smiled too, I got to shoot his rifle, with his ammo, and it didn't cost me anything. I think his was on '06, but it hardly matters now.

I doubt you're ever going to see a thread about the Model 6. It was only produced for 7 years, from 1981 to 1987, and was simply an enhanced version of the 7600 which as been in production much longer than 7 years, along with the 760 preceding the 7600 time frame.

Rather, you're more likely to see a thread about Remington pump rifles and the people who are enthusiastic about them. While I think the 760 is a better built gun with its more numerous locking lugs on the bolt and it's 6X48 base screws for the scope mount, versus the 8X40 base screws and fewer locking lugs on the bolt on the 6/7600, they are basically 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, they are Remington pumps, and people tend to love them or hate them.

It is an absolute natural for someone who cut their teeth on a pump shotgun, and I was one of those people. Additionally, I live in the Socialist Republic of New Jersey, where centerfire rifles aren't allowed for deer, yet hunt New York also, where centerfire rifles are allowed, so I put together a pump slug gun along with my 760 and endeavored to make them close enough that I felt I was handling the same gun in most any local hunting situation.

I don't think you needed to get a model 6 to get a good piece of wood or 'eye candy', I bought my plain ole 760 in 1979, no monte carlo(which is perfect with low rings), and the wood is pretty hard to beat in my opinion, maybe I just got lucky, LOL.

And yep, the bolt guys simply don't want to hear it but in a lot of cases, those Remington pump rifles are more accuate and shoot tighter groups that some of the more expensive bolt rifles. It simply is what it is, wether they want to admit it or not.

My 760 is a 30-06 carbine, and matches up pretty good with the 870 slug gun shown in the pic. Bought the 760 in 1979, added the Leupold Vari X III 1.5X5 a year later, and it hasn't changed since then, seems to hold zero year after year, shoots tighter than some of my bolt guns. And generally during deer season it sits across my legs in a deer stand till it's time to shoulder it and then it does the one shot bang/flop thing to deer, no complaints with it at all, LOL.

W m: I think you got lucky with the stock of your 760. Over the years I have seen a lot of 760s and yours has the best wood I've seen on one.

I was thinking the M 6 was produced a little longer than 7 yrs. but no matter. I would guess that you bought your 760 new in 1979. I may have misunderstood you but the 1981 Rem cat. shows pics of both the M6 & 7600 as NEW in '81. When introduced the 6 was only $20. more.

Rem. "said" the larger lugs were an improvement and I don't know if either one is better than the other. The 760 & 7600 (6) have been in production for a long time. They both work and work well. As you mentioned accuracy is not to be snuffed at so practically there may be no difference in the bolts.

I've read that Penn. may be the state where the pumps are the most popular. In the south you see them scattered around but they aren't the most popular rifle. I don't own an auto, and have more bolts than pumps, but the pumps are a NATURAL to shoot when hunting.

For guys who aren't used to a pump shotgun it might take some time getting used to a pump rifle. From long years of use of pumps, shotguns & rifles, the action has become second nature. I know one thing tho. I never missed a deer because I was hunting a pump.

Jwall,
According to Remingtons historical archives, the 6 was produced for 7 years. Here's a link with the pertinent info:

W m: Thanks for the link. I once had the info on the M6 & Win.70 Featherweight (the new one also intro. in 81). I know I still have that info but I haven't looked for it since I moved.

I don't own any 308 Win. if I come across a M-6 in 308 in really good condition I hope to get it.

Since no one else has responded that owns a M6 I guess it bears out that not many were willing to pay that $20. That's not necessarily bad for me. With so few sold, those in excellent condition could be worth more.

I've got one in 6mm Rem that I'm quite fond of. It shoots between 3/4" - 1" with factory ammo. I like the Remington pumps in general and in addition to the 6mm, have a 7600 in .35 Whelen and a Carbine in .35 Rem.
