Other than the 400 gr Hornady bullets - is there a suitable practice bullet avail for the Ruger Number One chambered for .450/400?
Am thinking of a 400 gr lead bullet perhaps, or a lighter 300 - 350 gr cast lead bullet for practice and lesser game.
Any alternative to the 400 gr Hornady bullets when all that performance isn't necessary?

Yes,Lyman makes a nice 400 gr round nose mould,if you're a caster.If not,Cabelas sells pre-made .410/400gr bullets.I've shoot both and have been happy with them,pushed by RL15,Trail Boss and 5744.What gun are you shooting? My rifle is a Ruger #1 with a 3X scope.I've loaded from 1200 to about 1700fps.

Since Ruger settled on the .410" dia for the 450/400 any 41 Mag bullet will work. I can't wait to see what the Sierra 170HP will do to varmints.

If you're shooting a stout action like a #1 use a 300 grn slug for a 405. It's .001 bigger but it works fine.

Both Midway and Cabelas sell Montana Bullet Works 400gr cast bullets sized .410; I use these over 30gr of Trailboss in my Ruger #1 and they work fine.

Hawk bullets are very nice! I used them in my .450/400 Jeffrey's on my last trip to Tanzania and they worked perfectly on buffalo. They also come in different jacket thicknesses.

Hmmmm, I normally agree with Hatari, but my experience with Hawk bullets in the 7x57, 450-400, and 338 have all ended up in bullet seperation with the thickest jackets!
That has been some time ago so perhaps they have toughened them up a bit. But, they are still a C%C bullet much like all the bullets of yesteryear so don't push them very hard. I tried my best to get Hawk to solder the cores, but they wouldn't hear of it...
