I have a 5 r milspec that I want to start loading for. Looking for a long range bullet that will also have good effect on game. Seems Matchkings aren't hunting bullets and hunting bullets aren't long range bullets. I was told that the 5 r rifling is meant for the 178 offerings by Hornady. I was thinking of using a 168 BT for out to 600 yards? Any other bullets I should check out or try? Would a 175 matchking work for deer/hogs/coyotes? Thanks.

I have no idea pertaining to what you said about the 5R being meant for 178s by Horn, but the 178 BTHP is exactly what I was going to suggest. They have a great BC for a 175/178 class pill, and in my experience have tolerated jump to the lands really well, which you will have to work with in a .308 in a 700...

It'd be worth grabbing a box, at any rate. And yes, they'll smoke small game easily.

Thanks, no I was informed by "experts" that the 5 r was more ideal for heavier weight bullets. I was originally looking at the 168 in game kings but was directed that it was better to use 175/178's with 5 r rifling?

Amax's work pretty good as a hunting bullet and seem to perform very similar to BT type stuff.

I have been shooting Berger Hunting VLD's in mine. I have shot two white tails and they have been dead right there.

I also have a 5R. The barrel twist is what dictates the bullet weight you will be able to shoot. Mine has shot great with the 168's, 185's and 210 grain berger hunting vld's.

The AMAX's are supposed to kill well too, but i've never shot one so i don't have any first hand experience.

you need a new group of experts thats for sure!

5r is to offset lands and grooves for less bullet deformation. Second of all, barrel twist determines bullet length not bullet weight. Weight may follow based on ojive shape.
for long range over 500yds, a higher BC bullet will drift less and drop less than a lower BC.
Hormady Amax and Berger both make great long range hunting bullets.
I assume you are shooting a Milspec 308 Winchester?
.308 can be alot of cartridges?

what twist? then you're question can be answered a bit better!

The 175 SMK works extremely well as a long range game bullet IME

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Exo,

The 168 BT would be fine...as would all the offerings mentioned. Mine shoots everything I've tried great.

Just got some Sierra 155 Palmas loaded but haven't had the chance to shoot them yet (couldn't find Scenars at the time).

Your 'experts' were probably referring to the twist of the 5R (11.25") as being 'optimized' for the 175 gr bullet range. Regardless, it's an awesome rifle and will work great for your stated goals.

Thanks, I guess I should have clarified that yes the twist rate was for heavier bullets while the 5 r resist deformation making the 178 Hornadys the most ideal in some opinion? Snipers hide had alot of information pertaining to the 5 r milspec and bullets also. I would like to go with the 168's since it gives a little more velocity than 175's and heavier. The Scenars 155's interest me if it stabilizes them in this particular rifle. Time to buy and find out what she will like.

Yeah,

Now that I can get some Scenar 155s I'll be trying those. Just saw this thread and was completely taken aback. Never woulda guessed the Scenars were that potent (and Pat is one of the few I would trust).

Muzzle velocity is one thing. Downrange velocity/energy/drift is what you want to look at.

You'd better have one of those killer tommahawk tracking lights and a pistol to finish 'em. That was my last experience with a 175SMK. You will get similarly unreliable performance from AMAX's as well. Oh, sometimes they'll be DRT, and sometimes you'll never find 'em.

Bergers however, just plain work.

Also the 5R was designed for the 175 SMK, but that doesn't mean it won't shoot lighter bullets. 5R's appear to be the only barrel leaving the Rem plant that has any quality control applied to it. They actually do bother to crown them.
