I managed to ring the gong at 700 yards today for the first time using a Remington 700 ADL 30.06 and a Leupold Vari X LRD 3x9-40 scope shooting a not so accurate 165 BT and 180 BT. I managed on my second shot to connect the 700 yard gong! I couldn't get the 2 moa left of target hold that the guy shooting the 6.5 CM next to me did (Savage LRP w/Vortex Optics)? Great time at the range minus the wind!

Nice shooting. Steel is fun at distance-it can make you see what you and your rifle are capable of.

It's addictive. The good news is, with that gear list and handload spec, there's lots and lots of low-hanging fruit to pluck <grin>... with some effort you should be able to make big improvements FAST.

By the way next time you are at the 100 yard range crank the scope up all the way, put it on a target with known gradations, and take note of how many MOA the thin crosshair in your duplex spans before it gets thick.

The CENTER will hold.

It'll be awhile before my skill set allows me to get out to 100.

Steel is fun. Ed and I were just talking about how we need more dynamic targets in our lives!

Thanks guys, I was "lobbing them" so not much "precision" on my part but it was great to do that with a hunting style 30.06 shooting 165 and 180 BT!

Can't wait to get some more trigger time in and actually know what I am doing. The weight difference proved how much I difference in the elevation I needed to hold even if it were only 15 grains?

The wind also showed that a miss or hit was dependent on if it were blowing when I pulled the trigger.

I call it beginners luck but look forward to trying to actually learn how to consistently hit and with more precision instead of shooting a "big" silhouette.

I've been thinking of joining a range, so I can get to shoot more often.

I haven't shot much at long range since leaving Idaho . But 700 yards is about the distance that my accuracy started downhill fast . Shooting at a game animal at that range would be my outer limit on a nice day -just saying .

clouds dont' allow you to read what the wind is doing while you are aiming... mirage is not always a negative.... but you do have to correct for both the mirage effect and the effect of the wind at the same time

Lones Wigger always said..."Wind is your friend!"

[Linked Image]Untitled by Sharps Man, on Flickr

This kids 10 years old and he can stick one in your ear from 700 yards. His first shot I told him to shoot center mass on the plate shown and that's where the POI was. Wind picked up from 3 o/clock but I gave him no change because I wanted him to see what the change of impact would be! Elevation was consistent! 308 Winchester...imagine that! He's had a good instructor!
