Is this bullet going to spin out of a 1-8" twist, 23" Shilen chambered in 243 AI? I want to try some of those suckers.....

My elevation is 7,000' ASL, just for reference.

JBM Stability reports 1.69 stability factor, should be in the clear.... just wanted to know if anybody else had.

I will send you some. Kinda like the 105s and a 10T, you have a chance. I have buddies who used to shoot right beside me at matches running them in 8s while my 8T barrels never would. I go 7.5 if I want to shoot 115s. The bergers shoot good as well if you can keep them together. I never tried the thick jacketed 115s because I have been stuck on 115 Dtacs for a long time.

Sounds good, thanks EB. I don't know if they'll do anything at 3050 that a 105 A-Max won't do at 3150, but it'll be fun to try them anyways.

You can run 115s almost as fast as 105s not sure if it bearing surface differences or softer bullets. I run 115s over 3100.

BTW and this is just my luck I have a 8 twist 6x284 that I thought would surely stabilize the 115 dtacs....nope. I never get lucky.

I guess it will just come down to if that Shilen is a "true" 8T.... being so high up in elevation will surely aid it.

Yea 212 above salt water here, sure does not aid anything.

Tanner, what are you doing with them?

my 243AI with a 8 didn't like them. Went to a 7.5 next barrel and did better.

I shoot the 105's around here on critters and steel. Like the little extra speed smile

Hey Scott,

I'm not really sure, I'd just like to compare them to the 105s for fun I suppose. This rifle will be an 8lb deer and antelope type rig, and I'm hoping the 105 A-Maxes sing in it again. They've done great for me so far....

What kind of barrel was the 8Twist that you shot them in?

Don't I have the stock off your old 243Ai on my favorite 243AI? This was your stock once wasn't it?

Tanner,

Try the 105 Berger Hybrid if you're looking for a boost in BC over the AM. It's lighter than the 115 and has a G1 BC of 0.547. Although the estimated 0.575 BC of the 115 DTAC sure wouldn't hurt if you could get speed and accuracy out of it...

I was looking at the Berger Hybrid, too! They seem to be used dang near exclusively now in Tac matches by guys shooting 6's and have a confirmed BC that is stupid good.

What I REALLY want to do, is try some pointed Hybrids.... I've heard they are a whole new beast. The D-TACS come with a nice meplat already, but Litz tested them at .540... Pointing might bump that one too.

Realistically the .5 BC of the A-Max is plenty for the duty this rifle sees, but messing around with new ones is always fun....

To the original question, I have a 8T Broughton chambered in 6-284 (specialty handgun) that stabilizes the 115 DTAC past 1600 yards.
If your barrel likes the Hybrid, then I would go with that for the best combo of BC/MV

Dang, I will send you some of those as well. You really need to try the 105 scenar as well. The most accurate bullet I have ever shot. Will add a few of those for you too.

Tanner,

When my two friends and I decided to build 6mm platforms to shoot the 115 DTACs we researched the twist. Consensus was 1 in 7.5 or perhaps 1 in 8.7 twist. We bought three bartlein 5R 1 in 7.5 twist barrels. I chose the 6mm-284, Bruce the 6mm Dasher and Dan the 6mm SLR. NONE of these packages would shoot the 115 DTACs. Dan and Bruce are 1000 BR shooters and really know their stuff. We tried all sorts of combos and then moved on.

At the time the word was that our fast twists might unravel the 115 VLDs, at least my 6mm-284 certainly would. That left us with the 107 sierras which shot well in all three rifles.

Then the 105 Berger hybrid came out. By then Dan and Bruce had moved their barrels, dies etc down the road. They are always doing that sort of thing regardless of caliber/chambering. I decided to see if the 105 hybrid would shoot with a random seating depth that would fit and feed from a Wyatt's mag box in my SA model 700. It did! Jump was .065". I have been shooting the 105 hybrid ever since.

If you can get the 115 DTACs to shoot that would be great. If not then you know that the 107 sierra and the 105 Berger hybrid will most likely work in your package.

Thanks for weighing in guys....

AZShooter, when you say your rifles wouldn't shoot them, do you mean they wouldn't stabilize, or that you just couldn't quite find acceptable accuracy from them?

The consensus over at SH.com is that the 105 Hybrid actually has a better BC than the 115 DT and is likely going to be a little easier to tune due to that hybrid ogive. I guess that pretty much means the Hybrid is the one I ought to be trying.

Pat and Jordan, I know both of you guys have shot the 105 Horn HPBT quite a bit. Have you found it to run true to the published .530 BC? And, how much different is it's ogive than the 105 A-Max?

Thanks all.

Tanner,

I personally wouldn't shoot the DTAC 115 in that 8 twist. You will not like them as soon at is gets cold and not to mention they pencil through animals.

When I switched to the 105's, the coyotes and critters are DRT.

I run the Amax here at a G1 of .492 BC, seems dead on.

The DTAC was a .535 here and the HPBT was .520 BC

Have not shot the Hybrid yet.

I have also been using a .490 for the AMAX and it's been right on for me.

Very cool you've found the HPBT to shoot near .520! I gotta' try some of those.
