Gentlemen,
I have a couple of ideas and I thought I would throw out for your thoughts. I've been otherwise occupied for the last few months and I have an desire for a custom rifle. Tell me what you think..

1. 7mm WSM setup on a Surgeon 591 repeater OR single shot. The Single Shot would be seated just slightly into the lands while the repeater would have a bit more room. Thinking of setting both up for 175 grain Sierra Match Kings or 180 grain Bergers. Dunno on stocks. Have a propensity for A-5s, however, I'm thinking an A-1C might be interesting. Even though I've had my issues with that handle in the past. The other stock is the Remington Hunter. Basically a McMillan Sako 75 setup for a Remington. Would leave the barrel and the chambering details up to the smith. Open on smiths as well. Have thought of giving Chris Matthews a shot...

2. All out .338 Lapua setup on a Surgeon 1581 XL Single Shot in another McMillan A-5. Thinking about turning necks just enough to load to a number and not a tolerance. Barrel make and length are completely up for discussion as I have a AAC Titan 3-4 months in process to keep things reasonably quiet. I'd like to leave the can on the rifle while it's in the safe to avoid any poa poi change. 300 grain pills of course...

Thoughts?

Regards, Matt.

Here's what I'd do...

No. 1 sounds like maybe you're wanting a mid-weight rifle. My experience is that you end up with something that's neither here nor there and you're not satisfied in the end. It's not light enough to really carry around and not heavy enough to make it really comfortable to shoot at the range much.

I would use Robert Gradous, but Clay Spencer has a very good 7mm WSM reamer!

From what Iv'e seen and heard Mr Gradous is pretty talented...

He taught slg888 how to walk and chew gum at the same time, so teaching Frank must have been easy!

Matt,
You wild and crazy guy.

I'd look real hard at an action from these guys.
http://www.x-tremeshooting.com/
Then i'd have the good Mr. Chris Matthews screw on one of his carbon wrap barrels.
As much as I like both of the rounds you listed and I do like them alot.
I'd have Matthews do up one of those TI recievers in a repeater for the 338 NORMA.
The 338 NORMA will do just about anything a 338 Lapua will do with the 300g MK and 10g less powder....Just ask Mr.Matthews
Not a big ACIS fan and not a fan of that rounded crap on the forend of the A-5.
I'd look hard at the A-1C or the A-4 with edge.
What can say,I like flat forends.
At least with a flat forend you can bench the thing right.
Im sure you can find a S&B kicking around somewheres to top it off with.

1 repeater

Heavy filled '5 and DBM for COAL latitude. I'm going Jered's next.

No more than 24" for me,as I've went 26" too many times.............

I've heard Mathews is out of business

Why not build a long action 7wsm bdl set up for the 180g bergers
And leave nothing to chance.

Every rifle that Chris has built that I have seen shot extremely well. Chris is a long range competitor and long range hunter and is the real deal IME

Chris is a very good smith to deal with and his work is top notch. He built a 25-06AI for me on a Sako AV action a few years back and the gun is so consistently accurate with a variety of components that its boring.
