Im considering re-barreling a 722 Rem with a new stainless barrel. The original barrel has a sight boss for the rear sight. I will probably use a McMillan stock and can have it made to accept the original barrel contour or a barrel without the "sight boss". I will not have a rear sight so there is really no "need" for the new barrel to have this feature. In reality, however, I like the way it looks. I have always liked them on pre-64 model 70's and on the 722 Rem. Are there any glaring reasons to eliminate this sight boss on the new barrel? Conversly, does a sight boss bring any beneficial features to the table other than a place to dovetail in a rear sight? thanks

Yes, it allows you to pay more for the barrel.

If you inquire with your barrel blank manufacturer, they will have a listing of contours that they will do. If your contour is listed, most do not charge extra for that service.

Contour is pretty much the eye of the beholder now.
