I need some advice. I really like the current Remington M700 Alaskan Ti rifles. They fits me just right, feel great and I shoot the one I already own very well. ![[Linked Image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/2008NWTMooseCaribouII050.jpg) I�d like to purchase a second Alaskan Ti and convert it to .35 Whelen for dark-timber elk hunting. It would seem that there are two possible routes for this. 1. Buy, say, an Alaskan Ti in .280 or .30-06 and have the barrel REBORED to .35 Whelen, if possible. 2. Or buy a .280 or .30-06 Alaskan Ti and have it REBARRELED to .35 Whelen. REBORING QUESTIONS Is it possible to rebore the factory, fluted barrel on the current Alaskan Ti to .35 Whelen? Is there enough barrel thickness to do that? What caliber should I start with? If it is possible, who specifically would you recommend for that reboring job? REBARRELING QUESTIONS Or, would I be better off simply rebarreling the rifle for .35 Whelen. If so, who specifically would you recommend to do that job so that the new barrel was a fair cosmetic match for the old factory barrel (fluted or maybe just round)? Your ideas and suggestions on this project would be very much appreciated. Rebore or rebarrel, and who should do the work?

I would Rebarrel, Sell the take off or save for a spare maybe trade material...

Call Jim DuBell at Delta Gun Shop in Colville, WA and talk it over with him. He bought Cliff LaBounty's reboring business and carried it on. He can tell you if reboring is an option, and what the best choices are. If it won;t work, he can fit a new barrel for you.
He did my .338 Federal RSI, using a PacNor barrel, and I have been very happy with it.

I'll throw in another option. I used Jesse Ocumpaugh in Cottage Grove OR for an 06 to 35 Whelen rebore. I am very happy with how it turned out. His number is:541-942-1342. Always good to have options...

I should have specified this in my first post, if the cost is close to the same, you would have two barrels for the price of one...
Another point, what type of accuracy guaranty you going to have on a re-bore vs. new barrel..
The only reason I see re-bore as an option is if it were an irreplaceable heirloom...
Get that new 35 whelen (great caliber) barrel screwed on and get to shooting�.....

I had this very same dicussion with John Barsness (aka muledeer)when he stated that the .350 rem mag was better in a light weight, sheep rifle type of set-up (who would use a 350 for sheep i dont know) but i said all someone would have to do is re-barrel a 700 titanium to 35 Whelen and they would have a great hard hitting, light weight, classic. He didnt seem too hot on the idea, or maybe he just didnt like me questioning his "expertise" i still think its a great idea, let us know how it turns out. I would go for the re-barrel, you have unlimited options for barrel manufacturers.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Rebarrel. Measure the Ti's barrel at the muzzle, subtract .308, add .357 for your new muzzle diameter. Have the contour and fluting matche and you should have near identical weight and balance. Nice caribou!

Good advice on Jim Dubell above. I have three LaBounty rebores/rechambers (Rem 700 338-06 that was a 270 Win, J.P. Sauer pre-war Mauser 35 Whelen that was a 30-06 and 9.3x62 FN Mauser that was a 30-06) and all are as accurate as my custom barrelled rifles. Cliff wanted 1/10th of an inch aside at the muzzle minimum for his rebores. Not exactly sure how fluting fits into the requirement but I am sure Jim will tell you. I have a factory Ruger tang M77 in 35 Whelen that goes .560" at the muzzle.

send the one you have to extreme rifleworks and have it made into a switch barrel.rick steinhour is an excellent smith and has done many switch barrel conversions. i can get you a phone no. if you are interested.

It takes +1 year on the re-bore, re-barrel it with a custom stainless. Best deal on custom may be from Pac Nor Barrels. They will face the front of the receiver,chamber & throat the chamber for the rounds that you supply, their best Select Match barrel for $490...their work is excellent!
