What are options on cal/ chambering that can be built on a M700 .308 win action ? Bigger than a .308 bore please ! It needs to feed well, with little work to it. Factory chambering would be nice, but would consider others. Just thinking outloud ... Thanks

Have you considered the .358? It is a necked up .308 factory cartridge.

450 Marlin?
458x2"?
I'm gathering the parts to do a 460 S&W on a Winchester 70 WSSM action.

You'd have to go to the bigger boltface, but it's very doable.

Ringman nailed... 358win all the way! Yup. Lot's of good 35 cal bullets to choose from that work at that velocity range. Covers mice to moose... Dies are cheap and you make the cases by running new .308 brass through the sizer. It's about as straight forward to load as it gets. Feeds like a greased wiener and won't loosen your fillings every time you shoot it!

Not trying to turn the tide here, but I vote for the 338 Fed - shoots flatter than the 358 and still hits with a serious thump.

If you were willing to open up the bolt face you could make a 338 RCM. It is my fav SA thumper.

Thanks To use the .450 Marlin or the .458X2, which are definitely in the "Thumper" class. They use a .532" boltface The .308 and .358 both use a .473" boltface. This conversion would be a straight up barrel change.

.358 Win since you want more thump and close range. It is a handload cartridge for all practical purposes though. .338 Fed if you won't handload it.
... OR ...
Do something else with that action altogether and buy a Marlin levergun in .444 Marlin or 45/70. Since QC at Marlin (or rather Remington's Marlin) is real iffy nowdays, go with an older used rifle.

I know everybody's getting tired of these pics.....but here goes: 358 Win with throat cut for 200 Hornady SP's at 2.825" and kissin' the lands. Pac-Nor #3 cut at 18.5". Balances pretty good with the heavier contour barrel. Weighs 7 lbs with the Swaro.

Thanks for the info guys. Do something else with it ,yea that's a good idea! Like sell it . It wouldn't be any trick to screw on a 358 barrel. Same boltface, same magazine. Possibly a little touching up to make it feed where a 308 fed before, but that's no trick either. There's a few 'smiths around this area that can handle it easily. A 358 with soft 250 grainers has lots of "thump." Now, if you have a mind to sell it and get something else, then there is no better short to mid-range "thumper" than a 45-70! You would like that a lot. You can get a brand new H&R single-shot at Jays for about $270. Used Marlins can be found for around $400. I love my guide gun. If you do go for a Marlin, I recommend you get an un-ported one. Those ports do nothing but give the shooter headaches and ruin your hearing.
Our God reigns. Harrumph!!! I often use quick reply. My posts are not directed toward any specific person unless I mention them by name.
