I found one of these in a shop the other day, pretty decent shape, standard .300 Savage. Priced around $350.
I have loaded for and shot two .300 Savage rifles; my 99 and a Remington 722 which now resides with my brother. I've always heard of the 1920, but can only remember seeing ine other before years ago. I know they are generally regarded to be way ahead of their time and are somewhat rare.
Is this a pretty good deal? I really don't need another rifle, but frankly, the older ones are more enjoyable to play with than newly manufactured stuff and just feel better in the hands.

If it was in good condition with a good bore, I'd have walked out of the store with it.

Well, I may just have to find the time to get back there, the shop is about 100 miles away, and the firearms deer season is on now, but look like I'll have to, LOL. I really should have when I was there, but it seems I've been buying a lot of guns lately.

I paid $650 for mine, and that was the cheapest I'd seen one in many years.
I'd take a drive to pick that one up. They are not common

and a bolt, and Lyman sight, all by themselves, went for almost $400 on GB this morning.

Ok, I picked this one up, haggled the price down a bit, and am working now on getting the parts I'll need for the Lyman 54 base on it. The serial # is 75XX, only four digits so I assume it's an early one? Can anyone tell me what year it was made?
The fold down factory rear sight is missing the blade that moves up and down in a dovetail secured by a set screw, does anyone have any idea for a source of that?

1923 on the gun.
What do you mean about parts for the Lyman?

It had a base for the Lyman 54 aperture sight that fits on the cocking piece. Apparently, those sights are real hard to find, parts or whole.
I'm looking forward to getting something on this so I can shoot it. I've run a couple of wet patches through the bore and it looks OK, I'll know more when it's a little cleaner.
I'm sure the stock on this one is not original but it is pretty nice and was well done, I like it and it looks good on the gun.
Now that I have two 99s and this, I guess I'm a Savage collector (plus a few 110s and one old 340 in .30-30 that is endearing itself to me very rapidly).
Thanks very much for the date of manufacture.

I had a base once myself, I think it was Gary and I talking about this but we came to the conclusion that a Lyman #53 slide might work but neither of us got around to trying it out. If I had one here right now I'd try it on my #54.

The fold down factory rear sight is missing the blade that moves up and down in a dovetail secured by a set screw, does anyone have any idea for a source of that? The #54 was an option on the early 1920. The barrel was dovetailed for a standard Savage Flat-topped Sporter rear sight. I didn't think they shipped with a fold down but could be wrong. If it did ship with a fold down I would think it would have been a Lyman #6.

The rear sight on this is not like that at all. It's one that folds up or down, no ramp like that at all. I'll get some pictures up here soon.

Sounds like it's gonna be a Lyman #6 or #16.

Like I said, the stock is not original, I'm sure. Unfortunately, my photography skills are lacking and all I had was a cell phone, so the pictures of the sights did not turn out well, but I'm sure I have the base and the little dovetail stub for the Lyman 54. The folding rear sight I'd like to know more about. It's missing the blade which rides up and down in a dovetail slot and is secured by a set screw. The front sight is very tall, I'm guessing the former owner installed it to get it to hit to point of aim with the Ltyman 54.
