Hey everybody. Here is a picture of my Savage 99 .250-3000 Serial# 636***.

My grandfather gave it to me just before he passed in 2010. It's in fantastic shape and killed many a deer in it's day.

I'm just wondering WHAT ammo I need to buy. It seems to be difficult to find, at least at my local gun shops. I'd like to buy some and fire a few rounds out in the country this Spring. Also, where would I find information about the year it was manufactured based on the serial #?

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

Looks like a 99R. They have a reputation for being very accurate. Ammo shouldn't be too hard to find at a decent sporting goods store, or you can find it on GunBroker.com.

If you give us the serial # someone here can give you the date of manufacture.

Beautiful inheritance! Looks like a post war "R".

Should be a very accurate rifle; try shooting factory ammunition like Remington 100 grain Corelokts.

Thank you for the swift reply! 636475 is the #. How can you tell it is "R"? The firearm only says "Savage Model 99" on it. Thanks again!

the large "beavertail forearm" makes it an R... if the 100 grain bullets do not shoot well, do not give up just find some older 87 grain ammo.

I see so the waffle-style forearm or beavertail is how you can tell. Very nice. Looking up ammo now. Thank you.

yes, they only made two models in this time period... the R has the beavertail forearm and the EG had the schnabel forearm. Both had 24" barrels... the butt stock on the R is also a bit more "robust" but its a nuance you probably would not realize if you did not have one of each side by side.

Maybe that's why it's a "R", its "robust" smile

Also, you'll find the ammunition marked as "250 Savage" rather than 250-3000. Same cartridge, the name just changed at some point from 250-3000.

If you can't find ammo locally, might be able to order it on the internet.

He's never in a shortage of 250 ammo though. [frankly I'm envious looking at that crate of ammo!]
