I've been readig on here a while and thought I'd ask if any here have cut down a 99 barrel. I have a beater eg in 300 sav. and was thinking of making a trapper model of it. Put out some pros or cons or pictures. I'm all ears.

seen two on here... one of which just sold on GB... 16" barrel claims to have shot accurately.
Other one was a 300R... don't remember how short the barrel was now... it was also for sale.

Whenever I heard the words "99" and "cut" used in the same sentence...I just cringe.

Don't get to squeemish. Fixed cracked stock, non factory d&t, sanded here and there, good ware on bluing. These thing are about a dime a dozen, and somewhat over rated as far as shooters go.Evan so,I never concidered a $500.00 to $1000.00 savage much of an investment unless a fellow wanted to wait two life times.

Welcome to the fire. Corelokt had or has a "trapper" version. Not sure if he did the work or acquired it that way. He might be able to answer some questions. Plenty of other knowledge to gather as well from the guys. Jim

GB, Here is a picture of mine, cut it to 18", love it. Shot a few deer with it, handier, lighter and the dead deer could not tell the difference.

Savage 99 brush gun in .358 cut down to 20". I purchased this gun cheap because of the cut barrel, but I realized after hunting with it for a few seasons that this is the configuration that savage should have built the rifle in. If it had the lever safety instead of the tang safety it would have been even better. Weagle

I'd say there wouldn't be much harm in turner a beater EG into a trapper. Somebody in a 100 years might cuss you out, but oh well.
If you're going to cut the barrel, you might consider hollowing out the buttstock enough to keep the balance at the receiver. Would also lighten it up some.

Greenbelly... Welcome to the Forum... I dunno know about a 16" barrel, but the 18" barrel on Jay's rifle looks pretty good to me. I'm thinking that a barrel cut down to 16" might look a bit too "stubby"... whatta you think? By the same token, like a good many others here on the Forum, putting "Model 99" and "cut down" in the same sentence makes little beads of sweat "pop" out on my forehead, but it's your rifle and YOUR business what you do or don't do with it. Years ago I picked up a 308 that had been cut to 16" and hunted it for a few years. It was a deer killing machine for my style of hunting, still hunting the swamps of N. WI & MN. My nephew is still stacking them up with it. I let him use it after I filled my tags and told him if he killed a deer wth it he could keep it, he did.

You might want to reload with a faster burning powder to cut down on the flame and wear ear plugs. If you go 16" I'd do it on the long side (16 1/4"?) just so you stay on the legal side.

The one i built with the 16 1/4" heavy barrel balances perfectly, i wouldn't have done it but the barrel had a ring in it at about 18", its a nice little rifle, takedown with a tang sight,it makes a great little camping gun. Don

Why not its your gun?..I have had a couple cut down..The nicest 99 I ever owned was one I cut down and customized and stocked in a piece of nice exhibition Turkish walnut..
I am going to do another soon, and it will be a carbine with a 20 inch barrel, quarter rib, barrel band front sight, talley QD rings and bases and a 7/8 inch Leupold Alaskan scope..The wood will be Russian walnut with 28 LPI checkering, panals checkered and mullard borders..14 inch pull to a Neidner type steel buttplate (maybe with a trap door someplace) Caliber will be 250-3000.

I like it. Saddle ring carbine trapper take down deluxe. I'm thinking of going 16 1/2" and cut the forend down to a R look, just a bit slimmer.
