What's the story on these? What's their purpose? Tackle-box scale for weighing fish?

I think they were just a general purpose scale. Never heard any specifics and often wonder why Savage would bother with such a thing. I have seen them bring some stupid prices on ebay!! (what a surprise, eh?)

I have seen them bring stupid prices and there is at least one on ebay that has been for sale for long time for a reasonable price... I think steve has one for sale on GB also... I have zero interest and have seen a lot for sale over the year

I have one. Not sure what they are for. I've heard trigger pull, weighing shot and such. Mine is a bit beat up.

They were made for the Lewis machineguns. Can be seen on pages 48 and 49, "PLATE X - ACCESSORIES" called "Spring Balance", of the LEWIS MACHINE GUN HAND-BOOK. It was used to check the mainspring tension which was supposed to be between 12 and 14 pounds. Now the dunce cap is coming off for good!

Got to credi John with passing that factoid to me at the last fest. Then I found a pdf of the manual.

Those things are a real hoot to shoot! They are heavier than my R though and are much more fun from the bipod. The one I shot was chambered in .30'06 and one needed a Dillon to load for it.

Here's another link that might be easier for folks to download from. http://stevespages.com/pdf/savage_lewis_machinegun.pdf

I use them to check trigger weight when I'm reworking a 10-22. Most of them are still accurate enough on the low end. I've got 6 or 7 so just pull one against the other to find the good ones.
Many have come back to the US via eBay-England.

I just picked this one up on eBay earlier this morning from a seller in England. It's the first I've seen listed with any mention of the Lewis machine gun.

That's because most people don't know why they were made.

You got a good price on that one and it still has the ring/hook on the ends.
