New to forum, thanks for making room for me.Recently purchased my first99. 99F in.308.As the mystery of the 99"s unfolds before me, I have found another.I made an offer today to buy .300 and I looked on lever boss and saw 2B.So maybe this is a 99B? 24 inch barrel checkered wide forend.Checkered grip.Bore is very brite.Finish original and really the rifle is excellent.Savage tapped and drilled.Has a old k-mart scope. Listed for 675.00.My offer of 500,wasn't received. My only issue is the avail of ammo.No don't want to spend time re-loading.So what about my offer too low?Is this a 99b?Thanks to all

The stamp on the lever boss is the inspector/date code. It started in 1949 with the letter A. B = 1950.
500 is a little low if it is in really good condition.

OK got that.So with the help of this forum and month's of research I will go up in $$ offer for the firearm. It is very very clean, made in chicopee Falls.99R I've been looking for.Wish it was in .308,but will make do in.300 .I new if I started giving my firearms to my nephew it would lead to this. But I'm amazed being from NY originally about the savage story.

Welcome pigpen. You'll find more info than you can ever retain on this forum. I started with "1" model 99C-243, (1966 mfg date), four years ago and now own "12" of them. They're addictive but Oh how they shoot and hunt.

It's an R in 300. pigpen, there were only 2 models made in 1950, the 99EG had a thin forearm with schnabel tip, the 99R had a wide forearm with rounded end. Savage moved from Utica, NY to Chicopee Falls in 1947, so the address is correct.
99R's in 300 are quite common.. going up to or over $600 for anything except a VERY nice one seems high to me.
