OK, but was the engraving on the belly of the receiver as well?

It would be interesting to see if that rifle letters as engraved.
It looks like Tue's style. A grade.
I think there were variations with some engraving, additional accents added, owners name on rec'r belly and maybe more.
This is an area I wish there was more info, data and pictures.

Hopefully I can get deep into the subject of engraving in book 2.

The belly on A engraved rifles wasn't normally engraved, that was reserved for higher grades. The style is right, but it doesn't look right. No scrollwork on the top of the receiver, no lines along the edges of the receiver, no etching on the top front of the receiver - all of this is very odd as well. I'm going to say it's very likely not factory..

Maybe, but who would go to the trouble of faking/duplicating factory engraving back then?

If it was only engraved on the sides I would say it was never completed but that would not account for the engraving on the bottom.

As Rory stated, looks like A engraving but it is missing the finishing details normally found. Would be nice to know the serial range as patterns changed over time.

Some guns Letter and dont say if they were engraved or not, I had one that had a fellows name engraved on the reciver, but the last name was spelled diffrent in the records, than the rifle.

Jeff, Any other clues on the rifle?
s.n.?
model?
wood?
checked?
strgt/pistol grp.?
butt?

Interesting rifle.
Looks like a 1908/09 rifle. ?? s.n. looks cutoff and 5 digit which is within Tue's time at Savage.
Probably more questions than answers... smile
