Photo of the muzzle. I may take it out and shoot it with a string on the trigger and me behind a tree. The lever works fine despite the missing screw. David

Figure img 1960. It was carefully filed to match the contour of the barrel.

It'd be fun to track down why ol' Frank had the gun confiscated.

Have you checked to see if the numbers match? That's a very early SR.

I don't think I checked the numbers. Just put it back in the safe will check them later. David

I think we need a Savage fest door prize for the "best" rat-savage (David's got a real contender here!), but the winner has to be willing to shoot the gun to claim the prize.

Like I said I'll pull the trigger with a string from behind a tree.
I passed on one that I think was worse 9 or 10 years ago. It had a half octagon barrel that was about 20" long. The buttstock had been cut down with a curve that was the reverse of a crescent buttplate. The bottom of the forearm was worn through from riding on a saddle pommel. Big chunks of wood was missing on each side of the tang and it had newer looking brass tacks in the forearm and buttstock. It was also a first year production 1899. I wouldn't pass on something like that now and am kicking myself for not buying that one. I think it was $200. David

That thing has a certain charm. I would make a bee line for it if I saw it at a show. It's so far gone that it came back.

Why waste safe space on that one? Hang it on the wall and hope thieves go for it first. grin

Didn't Savage catalog a "jack handle" model?

I'm gonna quit joking about getting old and early onset. If I typed three replies and forgot to hit the submit button three times in a row, I might have to go see my doctor, Joe.

That one got used to shoot whatever needed shootin', pound nails and possibly a even a few fence posts. Prolly split some firewood in it's time too.

Something to be said about an old gun like that. The people that loved that gun and used it to carve out their existence are surely gone now.

Makes you wonder about with who and where it's been.

Not worth much, but still very, very cool. cool

I pulled the buttplate and forearm. The numbers match on the forearm and BP. No number on the buttstock which has an 1895 type comb. It's obvious some whittling has been done on the stock where the 1895 cheek pads would have extended back. I can't leave it out where people can reach it. They want to pull the paper off the buttstock. There's room in the safe anyway.
I just tried to google Frank Mahoney. No luck.

+1 for hanging it on the wall. I bought a rat 1899 just for that purpose. It makes a mighty fine sight as you sit every evening and relax.

But, there is a Frank O'Mahoney, born 1886, but he died in 1953.Looks like the paper on the rifle says 1955. This frank is at Riverview Cemetery, he served in WWI. There was another Frank O'Mahoney born in 1910, died 1975. He was a LTC in the Air Force WWII. Favorite pass times hunting and fishing. But, I don't think these are your guy, Joe.
