I found a this gun in a local gun shop. its a 30-30. Very very nice condition, one owner, my guess is 95%. Asking $450.
What is the "white thing" embedded in the butt stock just ahead of the sling stud?
Is it a fair price?

YES!

Get it.

The white thing is the Marlin "bulls eye". It's a Marlin trademark, and as I learned too late NOT the place for the sling stud. If that one is not bubba'd and in 95%, get it. You'll be happy you did.

Then again, see if you can get them down a bit (hey, it never hurts to try, right?)

Sounds reasonable from the prices I see around here, but see what their low price is. I like the 24" barrels and my 336A is a fine shooting rifle. Marlin put too much lumber on some of their rifles, which I don't care for, but that can be overcome. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> -Joe

Picked it up Sat. night. Shop came down $25 and split the sales tax. I think the gun is better than 95%. There is one small scuff on the butt the size of a pencil eraser and some minor handling marks. No blue wear on the lever or receiver edges. Checkering is sharp. Screws untouched. Came with a real nice 1" leather sling.
So where can I find a period Lyman receiver site for this? What model Lyman is it? Any other site options from the 50's?

If you want to scope it, try getting a good, solid El Paso Weaver, something like a K2.5, with either the duplex reticle, or the post-and-crosshair. A K4 would work, too. Either of these would be rather correct for your Marlin, and the blued steel tubes on the El Paso Weavers, coupled with blued steel (gloss, of course) bases and rings, would look GOOD on that 336.

Sounds like you did ok. The old Lyman 66 all steel sight would be period for this rifle, along with Redfield 70 or 80 OM. You will have to search the shows, contact old sight dealers, or pay outasight prices on internet auctions. Probably less expensive to mount the El Paso Weaver in 2.5 to 3X as already mentioned. -Joe

I do not believe that gun is factory D&T for a scope mount, so I WOULD NOT scope it unless the D&T has already been done post-factory. It has the wavy lines on the receiver top, correct? Your idea is the right one...put a period Lyman or Redfield receiver sight on it. Drill it for a scope and it will no longer be worth what you paid for it.

Amen to that. It's why I "rescued" my '51 vintage sporting carbine, before some bozo went to drilling holes in it. Figured it had survived that long in original condition, deserved to go a few more years as long as I own it.

I have a more recent Williams sight on mine, but the next time I get to a show, might try to find an older Lyman and do it right.

There are at least two dealers I know of, that frequent Harrisburg shows and have cases of old Lyman sights and sight parts. Unfortunately, they're both extremely proud of their treasures and have them priced accordingly.

If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.
