Ive got a 336 r.c. 1948 DOM that was given to me by my great grandpa 13 years ago when i was 12. The rifle is in 95% condition as im the only one who ever even shot the thing! Even the loading gate has 90% bluing left. Anyway, the only tging wrong with this rifle is I'm missing the sling studs. I'm not sure what the original one's look like as they've been missing since before I've had the rifle but there is a stud hole in the bottom of the buttstock so i know they were there at some point. Can anyone tell me what the original ones looked like and if there's any way i could find a set? I want to keep this rifle all original and pass it to my son eventually. I think it would be awesome for him to have his great-great-grandfathers farm rifle someday!

Dub, The RC's of that day didn't have slings installed from the factory. Only the ADL and SD (appeared later) of early 336's have factory slings. Both ADL and SD have checkered stocks as well, so that's a quick I'd.

Your buttstock hole is likely the factory hole where the Marlin bullseye was installed. If it ever had a sling, someone probably drilled out the bullseye and drilled the center for a threaded stud, and used a magazine tube clamp/stud for the front.

That's a first year of production 336 and I would recommend you not be adding a sling and get another bullseye from Marlin or Brownells. They're easy to install and shape if you exercise a little care.

Okay thanks. Yeah i was wondering why that hole was there as there is nowhere to mount a sling up front near the barrel band. The "bullseye" hole hasn't been drilled to accept thread's either, so thats a plus. Im guessing the bullseye must have simply worked loose and fell out sometime in the past 60 years. Good to know.

I've seen many Marlin Bulls eyes drilled out and butchered,it's a shame.,

I bought a bullseye from Brownells thanks to dons1, and installed it a week ago. Thanks for the heads up.

Marlin lovers go nuts over a sling stud in the bulls eye. That is one of the easiest fixes you can encounter. Just take it out and install a new bulls eye. It is a much easier repair than a sloppy install job. I have one now that needs to be done to and three more that the thing just fell out and was lost. Jack
