Unit 54 ( North of Gunnison ) did extremely poor.Those looking to hunt it DYI and especially using an outfitter should check it out.

The 2nd rifle season which previously offered 500 w/cap bull licenses,now are OTC tags, unlimited.

Clearly this is a case of CPW only wanting more tags sold in an area that is a poor producer, mostly from the elk heading toward the private ranches on the Ohio Creek valley floor after the 1st rifle shot is fired in the 1st season.

Curious thing. About this three years ago,the CPW was still offering those 500w/cap either sex tags in 54.Then two years ago it went to bulls only. I was told by the local CPW office that the herds were close to management objective. Why was it opened up to unlimited bull tags then? Seems tom e, you would want to keep the herd to the same size then by only ofering draw tags
