I am getting a Bushmaster flattop from a friend and was wondering if anyone had messed with H380 as a powder. Same ballpark as Varget but in looking at various load data sites I don't see any data anywhere. I have an 8lb jug of H380 and was hoping to use it in the 223 as well as the 22-250. So, has anyone used H380 before or is there a reason not to other than there are better powders out there which I already know?

25. something IIRC.. I bought a 200 pound keg of surplus years back... doesn't get max speed with heavy bullets... but its that same charge area... 69s start at 23.0 and work up and you should be fine.

I wasn't planning on shooting heavy, probably 50-55 grains. I did a hundred 52 gr Speers with Varget today just to have to test the rifle when I go pick it up in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the info.

IIRC and I'm working from memory right now as I still have a lot of stuff in transit from one house to the next.... 52s were around 28 grains.....
I wouldn't PICK 380 if I had a choice but the price was SO RIGHT.... at the time.....
If I was running 50ish.... I'd look at WC844 or 846.... surplus... I can't recall which one is like BLC2 but that would be my pick... I think 844.....
If you were not after saving money then I'd look at Varget.... but I rarely shoot light bullets in 223 so I may have missed that.

You know how H380 got its name? Fella that designed it had really good luck with it in a 22-250.. 38.0 grs with a 55gr bullet did very well so he named it H380. Atleast that what my book says  Ive never used it in .223 but i have used it in 30-06.

Well I am actually someone who uses it a lot in the 223..
one thing cool about H 380 is a charge of 28 grains can be used with bullet weights from 40 to 70 grains, and it will give the same MV each time.. about 2900 fps in a bolt action 22 inch barrel..the only difference of course is pressure..
but it is also real accurate.. and gave pretty much the same POI at 100 meters...
and its make up, its a very friendly powder for 22 caliber necks at the reload bench..
and a small rifle primer works just fine..
