Our 11 yr. old female Lab has developed increasing urinary incontinence over the past six months. From what I've read this is not unusual with female dogs that were spayed at an early age, which ours was.

Our vet recommended Proin, a prescription drug but warned we'd see some negative feedback if we googled it. He was right, some dogs that took it had fatal strokes and heart attacks. Some dog owners reported herbal medication worked on stopping incontinence but our dog hasn't responded to this after six weeks of the herbal brand with the best reviews.

Other than incontinence she's got no apparent health problems and hunts as strong as she ever did. The vet says due to her strength and excellent conditioning she probably will be ok with Proin but there's no guarantees. Anyone here had a dog take this drug or any other drug that has been effective for this condition?

I have a female GWP that's almost 11 years old and she's been taking Proin since developing urinary incontinence after being spayed at approximately 6 months. Her health problems include dysplastic hips, and torn cruciate ligaments in both knees at around 3 and 4 years of age, but I've never heard of Proin being associated with joint problems in canines, so she seems to have handled her daily Proin dose OK.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, that's about when ours was spayed.

I guess it works or your GWP wouldn't still be taking it. Has she been taking it since right after she was spayed or did the incontinence develop later?

The incontinence developed very soon after the spay, and she's been on it ever since.

My concern is, has anybody else's dog been on this medication for incontinence? ... time when we carried an additional dog, our Newfoundland dog, home, so I didn't make ... was updated in a negative course by the Proin, so I attempted taking our dog off of it. ...

my gsp was on it for a while for incontinence. It seemed to help, we noticed no side effects. He was only on it for a few months and now no longer seems to need it.

Our 11 year old Weim is on it as well. Just like MT DD's she has been on it for most her life with no side effects. The first 8 years or so she got by with an extemely low dosage, 25mgs for a 75 lb dog. The last couple we have had to increase it a 100 mgs & split it up to once in the morning & once in evening.
