It's been 20 years since I hunted archery, but I am ready to get back to it. I'll be hunting whitetails with a mathews legacy and need some broadheads (or mechanicals, or whatever).

There are so many options, I'm not sure what to consider. I have looked through the forum and reviewed a number of threads, but would appreciate a simple recommendation or two - broadheads, mechanicals, brand, etc.

I really like the Rocket Steelhead, NAP Spitfire and the Slick Trick. My bow is tuned really good but I still shoot mechs for deer more than fixed blade heads.


I'm also shooting a Mathews Legacy.

NAP Hellrazors. I haven't had to try anything else. Exact same spot as my field points. Kind of lucked out on that one.
I'm relatively new to compound bows but doesn't bow tuning affect different head performance? Which would suggest trying different ones until you find one that flies well for you.
A good place to start is by reading some reviews on the ones that pique your interest to determine reliability.
Consider also, you may wind up with as many simple suggestions as there are options out there.
Again, I'm relatively new to compounds so take it for what its worth.

Is there an implied difference as to how well tuned the bow needs to be to handle mechanicals vs fixed blades?

100 grn or 125 grn?

standard or magnum?

125 grain magnum

Be sure the arrow spine is proper and this will be all you ever need for any game any situation

I bare shaft tuned mine out to 40yds, the more intune mine went the closer the 125 Slick Trick Mags hit to the FP's until they stacked right with each other.

I shoot the mechs because I feel like I get less wind plane and I feel they are more forgiving of grip errors. I have killed quite a few deer with archery and I have always had pass thrus with mech heads.


I shoot Gold Tip 340's with Blazers and 125gr heads.

I use 100gr Standard but pick your poison they are all good

Take a run over to Hoffman's Archery in Warrenton, ask for Farron.

Let him or Karl look over your bow, arrows, and shooting form.

Thanks Greg. I had it tuned and a new sight & rest installed about 3 months ago over at Extreme Archery in centerville, but will check out Hoffmans for the broadheads.

I reccomend either the Slick trick or Ramcat for a fixed blade. Grave Digger COC for a mech. Can't go wrong with any of the 3. I have no issues with flight and can readily change between the 3 with no difference in POI from my fp out to 40 yds (the max distance I have shot them)
