I just got a killer deal on a Winston Passport 9' 5wt and am going to use my Teton Tioga #5 reel on that.
My old St. Croix Imperial 8' 4/5wt will be fished with a 5wt line and can also use this reel.

Need reels for the following rods:


Sage RPL 8'6" 2wt
Sage SP 7' 6" 3wt
St. Croix Avid 6' 3wt
St. Croix Avid 8' 4wt

I ordered a Lamson Konic 1.5 which is designed for 3 & 4wt. It is too heavy for the 6' 3wt but balances out the two Sages well.

I also ordered a Redington Rise 3/4 and it does ok on the 2 Sages but is also too heavy for the 6' 3wt.

Thinking of ordering a Sage 2230 for the 7'6" 3wt Sage.

After talking with the Sage technicians I plan on fishing the 8'6" 2wt with a 3wt line. The old guy I got it from said that's how he fished it. So, I'm looking for one good reel that can share time between the 2 Sage rods.

When my St. Croix Avid 8' 4wt gets back from the factory I'm thinking the Konic 1.5 may work well on there.

I think I'm going to have to go with a click & pawl old-school reel (light) on the 6' 3wt.

Throw some suggestions out there!

I prefer the Ross Evolution Fly Reels. Rugged CNC machined Aluminum frames that are Extremely light weight.

A size # 1 should be perfect for your Sage 3wt. I fish a size # 0 on my Sage 1wt & 2wt fly rods.

Abel TR series. They make one for every size rod. TR -1 for small rods, TR.-2 for all medium, TR-3 for most everything big in freshwater. These are without a doubt the best made pawl drag reel available. The whole thing about drag on trout reels is as overrated as the angle compensator is on a rangefinder...

Lamson Litespeed Series IV is my current all around reel on my 9' 5wt. I fought a 3-4lb smallie on it pretty well. Lamson reels are just great, the Konic is really a great buy.

Hatch would be my choice.

I am only looking for one more solid reel that will handle 3/4 weight line at this point. Don't mind paying up to $250 but that's about my max.
Keeping the Lamson Konic to use on either my repaired St. Croic Avid 8' 4wt 2-piece or it's replacement which will either be a 7'9" 4wt 4-piece or a 8'4" 4wt 4-piece.

Lamson Litespeed is my choice on a 2 wt.

Lamson at any price point is about as good as one can get for the drag... Tiny rods hardly need fancy drag reels. But Lamson is my current favorite brand reel.

I have a ton of Hardys, both new and old school and really like them, but the cost to weight to value just is not there right now.

Ross once built very nice reels. That ended quite some time ago and Ross would be at the very bottom of any list I put together.

For the money Echo makes a very, very good reel.

Abel makes very good reels and if you like the cosmetics and need drags there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. But they are expensive.

Nautilus, Tibor, and Hatch make outstanding reels, but do you want to pay that kind of money?

I wound up with an Orvis CFO like photo.

Love my Konic for steelhead - were I getting more/lighter, I know I'd look there first. But I'm not an uber fly guy. I like to mess about.
