Can a 284 Winchester push a 140gr bullet, seated to keep the 2.8" OAL specs, at or above 3000fps out of a 24" barrel?

If deer-sized game were the primary target, would you go with the 140gr or the 120gr bullet?

I have a custom 284 with a 22 inch barrel.I'm using 150 Swift Scirroco with H414 and getting 2900 fps.This is with a Remington short action.OAL is just a little over 2.80.This bullet jumps .100" to the rifling in my gun but shoots great.You should be able to get 3,000 fps with a 140 and 2 more inches of barrel than I have.

I had decided to sell the action until I took it out of the box. I probably wouldn't get what I paid for it and it certainly is nice. It is a true short action, so I have to be careful what I choose to chamber it in. There is no going over 2.8" OAL.

McMillan inlets a few models for it, so I could put together something nice without dropping tons of money on a nice piece of walnut.

I had just about committed on the 25-284, but thought I would be limited to application.

If I didn't have to seat the 120gr or 140gr TSX too deep in the 284 Win. I think I would be very satisfied.

I made up some 284 dummies seating the 140 BT's to 2.81" and there is a space between the bullet's ogive and the case mouth.

That would shoot ok I suppose but I could not stand to look at it.

What application would that be?

If your really worried run a 7mm-08 or Ackley version of same.

OCC-the last 284 I worked with had a 22" tube on it and 29 was about the end of the line.

I believe you would be oh so close to 3K, if you choose to lean on it.

In the real world I'd just do it and deal with what speed you're given. I mean whether it is 29, 2950 or 3K it really don't matter.

What applications are you gonna be using it for, ranges mainly I mean.

The other idea is to just run the 120 TSX @ 3100 or whatever and be done with it.

I get 3100 fps out of my 20" barrel 284 Win with 120BTs, 52.5gr RL15, but I have a long action and my oal is 3.045". There is space available in the case, so seating .245" shorter to fit a short action seems to be workable to me. I would work up the load carefully (as we all always do).
This bullet/case combo has the makings of a great hunting round for about anything. The 120 BT (as reported by others here) is a stronger bullet that the 140 BT. It sure made a mule deer buck sick this fall for me. DogZapper has killed everything up to moose with the 120BT--search for his posts for some great info.

Concerning application, I just thought that deer-sized game and smaller would be my limit. Not that I have been fortunate enough to hunt anything larger.

Sounds like the 120s would be my best bet, but there can't be a significant difference between the 120s and say the 100s and 110s in a 25 cal.

I know that the 7mm-08 is the smart play, but I have always wanted something on the 284 casing. Actually the 308 might be the smartest play for me. I had even talked to Mickey about the 338 Federal and/or the 358 Win.

Well, throw in the 243 and 260 and you have about every short action round covered. Good to see you are no closer........

I got the same velocity out of my 20 inch Browning Micro at 2.800" shooting 120NBTs.

After having done just about the whole spectrum of 284 based wildcats, I'd come to think of the 25-284, 6.5-284, and 338-284 as the best of the bunch. For anything short of elk, my $$ is on the 25-284 as being the single best short action option that you could pick. If you add elk to the mix, the 6.5-284 might be a better choice, but if you can put a properly constructed bullet on target, there isn't enough difference to matter, but you've got to be able to shoot and break bone. For a dedicated short action elk rifle, I think that you'd be hard pressed to find a better option than the 338-284 and 210 grain Partition combination.

For me, the 284 lost most of its attraction when I got my 270 WSM.

My 284 will slightly exceed 3000fps with 140 Partitions and about as much 4831SC as you can stuff in the case. Darned accurate, too. Got to this load and quit searching as it will do all I want. Ward

I have a 284 that was a 24" 7-08. Smith cut the chamber with basically no free bore. One reason I had this fellow do the job.
Here is what I get and I am sure these are max as I tried higher loads and got definite signs of pressure.
120BT's - 3200 with 52.5grs of R15 (accurate-1/2-3/4")
140 Part - 3000 with 53.5grs of IMR4350 (so-so 1" or so)
150 Hornady SP - 2900 with 52.5grs IMR4350 (1")
284 is a SA 280 Remington. No more no less.
