I am wanting to devolop a load for my STW. I am thinking right now about trying the 140 Accu-bond, the 140 Partition, and the 140 TSX. Have all 3 in hand. Will probably try the 140 AB first.
I was origionally thinking about trying retumbo with these. I looked the 2 manuals that have retumbo listed in them and there is a big difference.
The Hodgdons manual says for 140 and retumbo.
starting load 83gr 3165
Max 88Cgr 3347

The sierra manual says
Starting load 75.9gr 3100
Max 82.4gr 3300

I see that the max sierra is under the starting hodgdons. Anyone had any experience?

Have just reloaded about 20 rounds of STW,(I bough about 7 boxes on closeout for $10 a box a couple years ago.)
Would you start with the retumbo of go with RL22 RL25 or something else. I have heard of people getting over 3400FPS with 140's. I am guessing 7828 will get recommended like it did for the 300WBY loads.
Thanks for any help
Mike
I just worked up a load for my own 7mmstw rifle using the 140gr mrx.80gr of imr7828 with a federal 215 primer and remington case is producing 3500fps with a 26" barrel and groups are averaging 5/8" at 100 yards.

Hmm. That sounds like a pretty good load. Any one on the retumbo or has anyone used it with 140's? I know alot do with the 160's and such.

Consider Ramshot Magnum, a more consistent choice. I worked with Retumbo and H1000 and never got consistency, plus there was great variation from lot-to-lot in Retumbo, like about 3g difference for the same velocity in the top loads. I ended up going to 160's and Magnum.

My 7STW really likes 76.0 grs. of RL-22 with the AccubBonds. It shoots .75" with the 140 gr. AccuBonds using Rem Brass and WLRM primers. My rifle shot ok with H-1000 and didn't like IMR7828.

Good luck.......

I have loaded for several 7 STW`s and with a 140, IMR7828 is hard to beat. Retumbo is way slower, and may be perfect for maybe 175`s, but go a faster rate for the lighter pills and start with 7828 and save some barrel life. 3400 is a good goal. Cooler temps and 81.5 grains does really well. Do not try that load in this summer heat. Excellent accuracy and the 3400 you can bet. I`d use 80 as a max during the summer time.

I am going to do some shooting today. Am going to try retumbo and RL22. Anyone know of a good starting point for the retumbo with 140's? The 2 loading manuals kind of made me wonder.

I noticed that I have a couple boxes of 150 Partitions. Would that be a better choice to use with retumbo?

Will have to get some 7828, Alot of people recommend it.

Thanks Mike

I just finished up developing a load. 160gr accubond over 77 grains of IMR 7828, Shoots 3180fps.

I use 7828 with my 150 partition load.Winchester brass and CCI mag primers.
Retumbo would get the call for a 175 grain.Otherwise she's a wee bit slow with lighter bullets.

Ok thanks, I guess I am going to have to get some 7828, Is there any reason to not get the SSC version.

So far I have just used the Rl-22 with mixed results.

The only reason I'd opt for the short cut would be the better metering qualities.

I have both versions and use the standard long kernel in such a big case.

Me too.I like the standard also.

Probably a dumb question, but can you interchange data between the SC and standard variety of 7828??
Posted By: 7 STW Re: 7mm STW and retumbo.. - 08/29/07
Yup your case isn't as full though.
Posted By: 340boy Re: 7mm STW and retumbo.. - 08/29/07
I gotcha.
After I posted that last, I realized the only caliber I use 7828 for is the 300RUM.
So, no Short Cut for me!

Ok thanks. So I guess the standard. Is there an advantage to the standard, just wondering?
Posted By: 340boy Re: 7mm STW and retumbo.. - 08/30/07
The only advantage I could think of would be the load density.
I think I heard somewhere(how is that for authoritative? smile )that a higher load density is desirable.

Well I picked up some IRM 7828 at my local shop yesterday. All they had was the old blue metal canisters, so I picked up one and took an empty hodgdons can and relabled it.

I have to say thanks for the recommendation. I worked up to the recommended load of 80gr actually ended up using 79.5 with the 140 AB. It shot 3370 and shot 3 shots you could cover with a sharpie lid.

I have had some thoughts of trying the 140 TSX but for right now will just be using this gun on whitetail so will just stick with the 140AB.

I do sometime want to try some of those GS custom HV bullets. I have heard that you can really get that 130 flying out of the STW. Its just the $70/box of 50 that is stopping me right now. LOL!

Thanks again, Mike

I`m really glad you tried that 7828. I could not get by without it. I have a large cased 7mm that runs 3600+ fps with the 140 AB and it loves the stuff too.

Oh ya, I also found out last night that it works pretty well for the 7remmag with 140's.

What in the world case is that based off of?
Posted By: Tim_in_TN Re: 7mm STW and retumbo.. - 09/02/07
I have a friend who built 2 wilcats from a smith Tim McWhorter off the 404 Jeffries case shortened to 2.5". These were fabulous with accuracy and speed. Then Remington introduced their Ultra Mag in the 300 but the case was to long for my liking. Magazine fit issues. Their 2nd Ultra was the 338 and it was shortened .090". I had 2 reamers made based off the 338 necked to 7 and 1 necked to 30. I built the 7mm
first and have been blown away with its accuracy and speed. It is the far right case next to a 6.5/284 and 6BR.

good grief. Nice! 3600FPS is moving for a 140. I would like to see what those 130HV's from gs custom would do out of that thing. Supposed to get close to 3750 out of my stw.
