The .270 shoots flatter, has more energy, is offered in far more loadings, and is one of the most popular rounds ever created.

The .260 kicks less and fits in short action rifles, saving you a bit of weight.

The two are basically suitable for the same kinds of game animals.

.260 bucks the wind better and has better terminal performance when it hits. this is due to the higher BC and SD.

what it may lack in flat-shooting, it makes up for in THWAK.

270 has 10 grs. more case capacity, and this makes for about 200-250 fps more speed with the same weight bullet in a 260.



In a +/- 3" point blank range sight-in, here are the stats:



260 Rem 120 gr. Ballistic Tip @ 2900 fps - 286 yards



270 Win 130 gr. Ballistic Tip @ 3100 fps - 299 yards





260 Rem 129 gr. Hornady SST @ 2850 fps - 283 yards



270 Win 140 gr. Hornady SST @ 2950 fps - 293 yards





260 Rem 140 gr. Nosler Partition @ 2750 fps - 274 yards



270 Win 150 gr. Nosler Partition @ 2850 fps - 282 yards





260 Rem 160 gr. Sierra Semi Spitzer @ 2550 fps - 247 yards



270 Win 160 gr. Nosler Partition semi spitzer @ 2750 fps - 271 yards



On average, the 270 has a 200-300 ft-lb of energy edge at 300 yards. The 270 actually drifts less in the wind (albeit a verry small amount), than the 260 does. But considering the speed advantage, the 260 is damn close. Maybe past 500 yards the difference would be more, but with hunting bullets inside 400y, it is almost identical. Both of these cartridges are in a group of about seven or eight factory cartridges that are damn near perfect for "normal" deer hunting.

One should also not forget the advantage of the 260 in Sectional density and wind bucking.

Best case both cartridges:

270/150 SD = .279.................MV 2905......wind drift @ 500 = 19.5"
260/140 SD = .287<(!!!).........MV 2830......wind drift @ 500 = 19.0<(!!!)

Boy, if those stats don't make ya wanna throw away your old .270..............

I think these numbers show very well why the 6.5X.308 has made such an impact on Highpower competitions..Those 142gr SMK's really cut the mustard.
