Does anyone in here have any thoughts on reloader 19. I have been told that this is an accurate powder but is very temp. sensitive. I was told that i shold switch to imr 4350. I am reloading for a 30-06. I have been able to get a 150 grain partition, 61 grains of 19 with cci primers at 1/4 moa at 100 yards. I only ask because this past deer season i did notice a differance in my zero with my gun and it was handled with care. They still grouped but at a differant point of impact. Any thoughts would be great.

I burn lots of R19 in a couple of different cartridges and don`t see any POI problems with ranges from ~10* - 90+* F that don`t appear with most other powders.(IMR, some Hodgdon, or Winchester for example)
The biggest variations in powder burn rates IMO come in the higher temp range where a load that is normal acting at say 70/75** F starts popping primers when temps hit 95* F. Dropping temps don`t seem to cause much difference.

I do not think IMR4350 is a temp stable powder..

Not a science thing, just loaded some during a cold snap, the load was spot on...
You know, all three touching..

Loaded some up for a hunt, went to retest load, WOW>.. Pressure signs sticking cases, lousy groups... Only difference was the weather...

It is an accurate powder but it is temperature sensitive. I have used it in my 270 wsm and 284, I could not get top velocities with it in either cartridge, I switched to IMR 4831 and picked up about 100 fps with a few grains less powder in both cartridges. I am waiting to pick up some RL 17 and see how it does.

RL19 is not really a temp sensitive powder, where RL19,RL22 and RL25 have a problem is that they are lot# sensitive. they vary more from lot to lot than any other powder's on the market.
If RL19 works good in your rifle just buy 5 or 10 pounds of it from the same lot#.

btw. I have not found this problem with RL15 and have not used RL17 yet

You might find that RL22 would do well for you in your 270WSM.........I have. Not many powders can give you the velocities that RL22 can in that cartridge........in real life.

R-19 is an excellent powder for the '06 and more stable than the 4350's in my 30-06s. If it works in your rifle stay with it. There is always some gun shop cowboy spreading the B. S. Verify everything that you hear or read.



R-19 is a little fast for the WSMs. R-17 is even faster, if R-19 is too fast will a faster powder work? Magnumb's recommendation is right on, try R-22 or R-25.

I have tried RL22 in my 270 and 300 wsm's, it just does not seem to work for me. Here are some of my results that I recieved using RL 22 from three different lots.
Rifle is a Winchester Model 70 black shadow, 24 inch bbl
average velocity from five shot strings, temp was between 75 and 80 degrees. Bullet used is a Nosler 150 gr partition gold.Primers are winchester large magnum.
Charge was 60 gr in lot 1 and 2, lot 3 was 59 gr, got sticky extraction with 60 gr from lot 3

Lot 1 avg velocity 2967fps
Lot 2 avg velocity 2927fps
Lot 3 avg velocity 2823fps
Groups were running from 1 to 2 inches


68.3 gr Ramshot magnum 2980 fps
This load shoots 3/4 inch groups

Winchester Model 70 classic 300 wsm 24 inch Bbl
Barnes 168 gr xlc
72 gr RL 22 2985 fps, this was just one round, slightly sticky extraction.

71 gr IMR 4831 5 shot string
avg velocity 3115 fps

Gave up on RL 22, gave what was left of Lot #3 to my brother in law, we worked up a load using 130 gr tsx bullets, his rifle is a remington 700, we got 3180 with 65 gr, shoots 1 inch groups, he is happy, so am I, good excuse to get rid of that powder.
When I first started to reload for the 270 wsm I found some old Dupont 4831 that I had stored away, the can was at least 30 years old, with 64 gr I got 3303 fps average with 130 gr xlc bullets, IMR 4831 which replaced it is giving about 3220 with 65 gr, the old stuff was a little bit hotter.

i use RL19 exclusively in my kimber 300WSM. I have never seen a POI change with temp here in Georgia

RL-19 isn't as cold-sensitive as some other powders, such as R22, at least in my tests. All powders tend to gain pressure and velocity) in weather warmer than 70, but some not as much as others.

IMR4350 is generally more cold-sensitive than R19, but H4350 is not. I have yet to see H4350 lose any velocity between 70 and zero F.

Often a load can lose some velocity and still shoot to the same place in cold weather. But some don't. It depends on the rifle, load, etc.

I use RL19 almost exclusively in my 6.5x55 and it works great. I haven't noticed any difference in POI in my rifle at temperatures between about 40 and 90 F-- but then, I guess I shouldn't expect any. We just don't get cold enough temperatures here in Coastal Northern California for it to be an issue I think. I used a lot of IMR and other powders prior to the appearance of the temperature insensitive powders (e.g., Hodgdon Extremes and RL15). At Coastal California temperatures I never had any issues. That said, I frequently will use temperature insensitive powders now if they work well because, well, why not.

I've been very happy with RL19 in the 6.5x55, but less so in .30-06 where I like H4350 much better. Probably depends on your conditions, rifle, etc.

I have an old customized 6.5x55 swede that just shoots lil ragged one holers with RL 19,another campfire patron here told me to use it in my 338 win mag as he said he gets best velocity and excellent accuracy from his 338 WM with RL 19,Ive tried it in another couple cartridges and was not impressed with it.......
