I managed to fireform some brass for my 25-06AI (Cooper Jackson Hunter) and I just broke the seal on a box of Sierra 120 grain HPBT. I decided to try this particular bullet as this was the combo with the test target that came with the rifle. Cooper used RL22 and I'm sitting on eight pounds of it so it's a logical choice. I'm not limited to RL22 however.

If you don't run the AI I would be happy to hear what your running this combo in your 25-06. I'm pretty much a Barnes/Berger guy and curious what Sierra's like for jump.

Thanks in advance

Wadevb1

I had a load of 56 grains of RL22, WW Brass and CCi200 primer that gave good groups and velocity with the Sierra 120 grain hollow point boat tail bullet. I can't find what the oal was but they were in close almost touching. My muzzle vel was 3128 FPS

Also when I developed this load none of the manuals had loads listed for RL22 and the 25-06 so I called Sierra and Speer and they recommended using H4831 starting data and work up.

This load is a couple grains above what most manuals list today. Most max out at 53 - 54 grains.

My experience with the bullet is different than most here. I shot a 6 point whitetail in the rib cage on a broadside shot busted a rib going in and did not mark the inside rib cage on the other side.

I like better penetration than this and went back to the 120 grain speer hotcore which I have always had good luck with.

IMR7828 gave the best MV and accuracy in my particular 24" bbl 25-06. 55grns IMR7828 lit by WLRs in R+P brass shows no pressure signs and gives 3175fps avg.

Took a couple does with that load last year. Pretty impressed with the damage as well as penetration. Shot one straight on in the neck and it exited her ham! Seated them just off ~.003.

Your mileage may vary....

Have a good one,

loder

Since 1991 I have used 55.5-56 gr of RL22, Win brass, CCI200, and 120 Speer Grand Slam. 3/4 inch groups and approaching 3200fps in a 24" barrel. The Hornady manual back in 91 had the load for their 120 HPBT.

Bullet usually exits unless shot diagonally or lengthwise and hits a heavy bone.

Damn, I thought the other 25 caliber was my beloved 25-35 Win.:)

I appreciate the responses and don't mind additional questions. I have all the powders listed. This weekend I'll be running different loads. Sierra was also vey helpful over the phone.

This is my first 25 caliber, happy so far.

Thanks

Hodgdon 4831 and 140 Berger VLDs are very accurate in mine

Standard 25.06

54 grains RL22, 110 AB @3150
53 grains RL22 115 BT or 117 Sierra pro hunter @3000
52.5 grains RL22 120 Sierra or 120 Speer @2950.

Damn near fugged a rifle up using the 91 Hornady data and 117 BTHP. Ain’t no way 56.5 is safe. Cooper lists suggested load 54-57 grains RL22 with a 117 Sierra in the 25.06AI.

Guys, this thread is over 13 years old. The OP hasn’t been back to the forum in awhile, he probably won’t see your posts….
