going thru data, i see with a 130 gr bullet, 4831 seems to get the best velo's, as i'm thinking of using 130 barnes's.
i tried to do a search, but the search function doen't give a lot of help with what i typed in.
so, i've got a 264 inbound, and was wondering who's using what loads, and what's gettin killed with it.
i get better results from IMR 7828 in the .264
my 130 TSX load is 65 grains IMR 7828 and get ~3250 fps from a 26" barrel. this is 75-100 fps more than i could get from either IMR or H 4831. as always, WORK UP TO MAX LOADS. i'd start at 60 grains and work up. pressures rise fast in this one, and some of my rifles won't take max loads.
i've shot everything from rodents to elk with this load. normally don't waste Barnes bullets on vermin, but sometimes i can't help it.
IMR-7828 is your brew for the 264
IMR 4831 shoots great in my model 70 Winchester behind a Nosler 120gr BT. 3375 across chrono, <.375 Moa at 100yd. Best Whitetail load i have ever used.
I get about 3300fps with 125gr Partitions and 130 Accubonds with 7828 (26" bbl),accuracy is great!
I'm using imr-7828 with 130 grain accubond. 7828 is the best powder i've found for the 264
looking like i am going to have to start stocking another powder !
264 Win Mag = Slow powder
These are loads with 140gr Accubonds from a 26" 1-8 twist in my rifle. COL 3.495
74gr H870 = 3220 FPS
64gr RL25 = 3120 FPS
65gr Retumbo = 3100 FPS
77gr US869 = 3080 FPS
76gr AA8700 = 3080 FPS
50BMG & the new RL50 may be good as well.
RL 25 is the cat's meow in this crtridge! I reached 3350 with the 125 NP and 3200 with the 140's.
I admit even though the speed is about 100 FPS slower than H870 with a 140gr, it is very accurate & cleaner burning
i've got lots of rl25
i was thinking a barnes ttsx/tsx would be a great all around bullet for whatever i pointed it at.
but a 140 at that speed may just do.
now to start stocking up on 6.5 bullets.
I've played with a bunch of stuff, but as said before 7828 is tough to beat. HOWEVER, I did recently switch my 140 loads to Win 780. I can get a bit over 3200 with it with 140s, and average 3515 with 120 TTSXs. I use 4831 mostly with the 100s (mid 3700s). Taken two elk with 140 Partitions and the 120 TTSX, deer with 140 Partitions and antelope with 100 gr Ballistic Tips (shot one in the neck and the head came off).
Splat,
There was a day when it was hard to find a powder that was to slow for the 264. With some of the slowest it is possible now. However there are only a half handful at that end of the chart.
That said 4831 is not a slow powder in the 264, usable but at the fast end of the 264 usable range. I have found good loads with RL-25 and Retumbo. 95 grain Vmax with RL-25 (coyotes do not like that load) And 130 grain Scirocco II with 67 grains of Retumbo (took a big bull elk with this load this year).
I tried some US-869 with 130 grain bullets and got poor results I am thinking that it is too slow???? at least for the 130s????
Stay with slow powders from 4831 to us-869 and you will find some thing that will get the job done.
8mmwapiti
64gr of h-1000 with a 140gr sgk works pretty well in mine
I've killed alot of deer and antelope with 65/H4831/120 Nosler Ballistic Tip, Fed 215Ms. Marvelous accuracy.
With 140s ,the best two powders I found were Magpro and Magnum. My results mirror John Barness's.I had tried N-560,IMR-7828,H-1000,Retumbo,and Rl-25.Even these two are not case filling.
I've been using Ramshot Magnum behind 140gr Partitions, 140gr Interlocks , and 120gr Ballistic tips. Velocities around 3200 with the 140s and 3400 with the 120.
I killed a couple of mule deer and an antelope with 65 gr of Norma MRP with the 125 gr nosler partition. I have recently worked up two good loads, 62.5 gr H 4831 and the nosler 125 gr partition, I am getting about 3240 with that load. The other load consists of 68 gr of Ramshot magnum behind the barnes 120 gr ttsx, that load runs 3268, I use winchester magnum primers with these loads.
bringing this back up.
i have some 120 bt's and 120 tsx's.
i am leaning towards this being an antelope rifle, so how bout some fast loads for the 120's.
just got 100 rounds of new winchester brass in today with a set of hornady n/d dies. (rcbs's are on the way) so now i am going to true the necks and deburr.
gettin all giggly about a new toy !
oh, and i hope you all have a wonderful new years eve, and a great new year.
i know, i know. but i don't have any right now. so i wanna try what i have...
splat, 66 gr H4831 ought to give you 3325 fps from the 120 TSX
work up to it.
oops, just read that you got RE25 on hand. try working up to 69 grains RE25 with the 120 TSX. should get you 3350 fps from 26" barrel.
I use both..with either H-1000 or 7828. I use R-P brass and either 250s or 215 mag primers. Running 3300 to 3400fps. Mine is a Kreiger 8 twist, but i am going to rebarrel to 9 twist. My first one was a 9 twist #2 comtour on a CLR action..what a joy to carry and use. It is primarily my antelope rifle...try it...you'll like it!!
thanks guys, appreciate the info.
my 264 is in phoenix ??
it went from colorado springs,co., to henderson,co. then right past me to arizona, now it's gotta come back this way ??
never ship fedex, they suck...
My current 264 deer/varmint load is a 130gr A-bomb atop 65gr of IMR7828, it chronies at 3275. It's very bad medicine on the deer crowd.
I've been thinking strongly on working up a load with a 140gr Partition for an elk round.
I picked up a pound of W 780 Supreme to try with the 130 Accubond. Anyone ever load this combo?
I found a load for the Hornady 129 grain soft point with the 780 on Hodgdon's site, and this ought to get me going, but I was curious about other people's results. Thanks.
Ok Guys. I am ready to load 120 gr TSX and 120 gr Nosler ballistic tips in my .264 Win. Mag. Ruger 77. I have IMR 7828 SC, RE-25, and IMR 4831 Powders and CCI and Winchester magnum primers. I am finding load data for my components hard to come by, and getting other components equally hard. Please help me get going using what I have. I have several different brands of brass but want to use R-P to start with that has been fired in my rifle and neck sized with a Lee collet die. miles
MIne likes the 7828 in R-P brass and 250 mag primers with either bullet. 264s tend to vary quite a bit with load data so find the starting load and work up. My current one wont shoot as much powder as the prior one and seems to build pressure a little quicker. The first had a Lilja barrel, this one wears a Kreiger. Both Nosler and Hogden load data is online.
Bill
Mine perked with 130 Gr SIIs and Accurate Magpro. 3250 FPS and accurate.
129 LRAB at 3250 with RL25. Under 3/4" groups.
