Is it possible, at safe pressures, to handload a 200-grain bullet to 2,700 FPS out of a bolt-action rifle chambered for the standard .30/06 cartridge?
..........That`s going to depend on the rifle itself. Such as, whether you have a slower bore or a faster bore, the bullet style (type of ogive) which determines how much of the actual bullet surface touches the bore, and a few other variables including the powder used and barrel length.
Although 2700 is a nice #, I can assure you, that if your rifle was only able to give you 2550 to 2600 fps with a 200 grain bullet and even from the same killing distances, it wouldn`t make a darns worth of difference on any game you could hunt using a 30-06.
If anything, it`s more of a curiosity factor. However, we are all curious as to how much bullet speed we can get out of our rifles.
By experimenting with some different powders including some RL 17 and using a chrony will you know for sure.
