This ain't gonna work is it? Ran some searches on here and didn't come up with anything for .270 winchester reloading, and was a little surprised it wasn't a sticky with the 30/06 and .308.

Anyway, I've got two loads that I like in the .270, both using a Hornady 130 g. spirepoint and Remington brass (both geared toward whitetail hunting). First, my full power load is 59.0 g. of H4831. Second, my squib load is 42.0 g. of H4895. Have killed whitetail deer with both. Last was a bang/flop on an 8 pt with the squib load. I'm callin it a squib load cause it seems to have about half the kick and muzzle blast of the full-power load.

rifle is an old school remington sendero topped w/ a leupold VX-I.

So what's everybody else loading in the .270? ive got some H4350 laying around here that I keep meaning to try, just haven't ever done it. Honestly haven't shot anything out of that Sendero that wouldn't group.

Been bangin' away with my 270 for 50+ years. Ran some 160 Partitions through it a few years ago. DANG !!!!


Never to late to learn something new.

Mostly 130 Hornady or 150 Partition over H4831SC or RL-15 for the last 35+ years. Got quite a few 140AB but haven't tried that one on anything but paper yet.

I've run IMR 4350 with 130 Speer boattails (deer) and 110 Sierras (groundhogs) for years. I'm tired of the chunks of powder in the powder measure so I got a can of Reloder 17 to try. If that doesn't work, the H4350 or the Short Cut 4831 will be next.

One rifle likes 56.0gr IMR 4831 with 130gr TSX, Fed match, RWS

The other likes 59.0gr H 4831SC with 140gr TSX, Fed match, Norma

Both are one holers.

Try some Ramshot Hunter or Ramshot Magnum.Flows very nice and similar to its "chunky" brethern in burn rate.

Mine runs on a diet of 55 grains IMR 4350 and the Horny 130 spire point.

Prints tiny little groups and flat kills stuff....

I like Ramshot Hunter and 140 grain Accubonds. It works in several 270s I own.

4350 and 4831 both worked well form me, but RL22 seems to have some magic, especially with 150s.
The 130 NP is about as good a deer bullet as is made, JMNO.

56.5 gr. IMR 4831 and the Speer 130 gr. Hot core. Shoots cloverleafs out of my old M70. Kills well and holds together. I used 54.5gr. of the same powder with the Speer 150 gr. BTSP a few years back, but the bullet disintegrated on a 15 yds. shot. 4 exit wounds. I used the Win 130 gr. Silvertip over 60 gr. H4831, but there was no expansion on a 110 yd shot.

57.0 H4831sc, 150gr Hornady IL, Win cases and Fed 210 primers is all I use in my .270. Works verrry well.

My m70 loves everything. My two go to loads are 140 accubonds with H1000 and 130 TSX's with lots of Magpro.

at the urging of another board member, I tried Mag Pro with the 130g HOrnady Sp flat base. His load and mine ended up being the same, 64.0g of Mag pro= 3115 fps out of a 24" barrel, clover leaf accuracy.

Another load we shoot is 58.0g of Win 760 with a 9 1/2 primer with the 110g Sierra Pro hunter and the 110g Barnes tipped tripple shock = 1/2" or less accuracy at 100@3375 fps.

I have five .270s and have had as many as seven or eight at one time. One load that has worked well in all of them is a 130-grain Partition over 59.0 grains of H 4831 in W-W cases with WLR primers. I switched to the same weight of H 4831sc about five years ago and it shoots just as well as the original loads.

guess I should have mentioned that I'm using the H4831sc. I don't think I've ever seen the old H4831 for sale, although I had an old can of it back when I first started reloading 15 or so yrs ago.

as an aside, I did chronograph the 59.0 g. h4831sc, 130 g. hornady spirepoint load out of a ruger m77 mkII (22" barrel) several years back. I was a little surprised to be getting just over 3000 fps, figured I would need to go to 60.0 g. to get that kind of velocity. But, this was in the middle of the summer, temperature was in the low to mid 90's. I decided at the time that was the explanation.

have not chronographed the load out of the sendero's 26 inch tube, but i have to think that it'd be moving a little quicker.

I have an A-Bolt Hunter with a 22 inch bbl.
It really likes 140 grain Hornady BTSP Interlocks over a stout load of IMR-4350.

The string that Higbean refers to is a great discussion. There seems to a tendency to load the 270 Win and 300 Win Mag a little on the timid side.
An observation, not a criticism. A 130 grain bullet leaving the muzzle at 2800fps is not all that much less effective, for most hunting situations, than one leaving at 3100fps.
Variance in trajectory arguments don't hold much water as there are to many guys happily using 150 and 160 grain bullets in their 270's. With great effectiveness.
Both rounds were designed to run at the high end of the pressure spectrum, so most factory rifles in these two calibers are built to handle them as designed.

I use 54 gr of IMR 4350 with a 130 gr. Rem. core-loc. It works for bear and deer very well.I have 5 pounds of IMR 4350 and won't ever buy any more. It sticks too much.

I use pretty standard stuff in the 270,mostly H4831 and R22.

But a few years back I messed with RL25 and the 130 gr Barnes XLC in a M70 FW. The max listed load of 65 gr gave 3200 fps in a 22" barrel.

Laely I have seen that 62 gr 7828 with 130 NPT gives a shade over 3100 from another 22 inch barrel.

I think about the only powder I don't have a pound of is RL25. May have to cure that problem today after looking at your results I have pretty much subscribed to dipping a case in H4831 and just leaving enough room for the bullet (anybodies 130gr ) for 35 years.
Just Ultra Bore coated a couple of Douglas barrels. Hope to get out to shoot today after church if it quites raining.

Dave I play here and there with a lot of stuff but if I need to know if a 270 shoots, I reach for H4831 or R22.

RL 22 and 130 gr. Horn. GMX. shoots tiny little groups at about 3100 fps, with a BC of .460 shoots pretty flat.

I shoot H4831SC and 140gr Hornady BTSP of SST. Chrono'd 2960 and both shoot crazy good. Great ballistics when you wanna reach out but perform well up close. Use this for our big deer here in Ssak with zero complaints.
I think it be the best all round bullet weight for this cartridge.

I switched to IMR 7828 right after it became available. I've had NO reason/need to change. 3100 with 130s is very achievable.




From a different perspective. I've re read this OLD thread from 2010 and NO ONE mentioned this load.

49 grs IMR 4064 - 130 gr bullets--J OC. Vel around 2900 fps. It's very accurate and has moderate recoil. Someone might find it useful for women or 'yutes'.

I killed deer with it before discovering Surplus 4831. Yeah, some years back.

Anybody worked up data with the Nosler 90 grain Bonded Bullet?

I've queried Nosler but haven't heard back yet and its no in their online loads.

Like to run them in mid-2000s for a mild close-range deer load and fast as possible to nuke our out of control coyote packs.

Had a hard time trying to find a sub MOA load for a new to me 270. Almost gave up on the rife in lew of my 6.5x55 and a 280. I was using the data from Hornady for the 130 SST and H414. just couldn't get a tight enough group. The groups all had one thing in common, two rounds would touch with one off forming the three shot triangle. I remember a post where it was recommended to adjust the COAL. After referring to my Nosler manual (still shooting the SST's), I went with a 3.320 COAL. Finally a five shot group that can be covered by quarter. Note: When I ran out of SST's I moved to Nosler BT's most cause of cost) So...

I have a Montana ASR in 270W. It likes a 140gn SST with 58.5gn H4831sc. Puts 3 in about 3/4inch at 100 with a cold clean barrel.

My Montana ASR like 58.5grains of 4831sc and a 140gn Hornady SST. Consistently 3/4 inch at 100. Nice and flat too. Can be a little hard on smaller deer though.

JWALL, When I got into reloading 270's, back in the early 70's, 4064 was commonly used by many folks. It was, and is, a pretty effective package.
Over several decades of loading several 270's, I have found the caliber pretty easy to get along with.
Perhaps out of context: Mule Deer once quoted a friend of his to the effect that a case full on nitrated manure under a good bullet would likely shoot well.

I have used 4831, 4350, and RL22. I get the best velocity and accuracy in my rifle with RL22 and a 130gr. SST.

IMR 4350, federal match primers, 130 Barnes

H4831 and any LR primer with 130 -160 gr bullets.

Any feedback on the Nosler 150gr, ABLR on paper & game? Is the 1-10" twist fast enough? Berger & Alliant shows RE26 gives the highest velocities w/ the 140 & 150 gr loads. Experience w/ RE26?

I agree RL26 will give the highest velocity with 140gr or 150gr 270 bullets. But I think I get a little accuracy with
Norma MRP in the 150gr bullets. With the 140gr bullets my most accurate load is with RL23 at about 3050fps.
I can get 3125fps or so with the RL26 and MRP. Superformance also gives about 3050fps with the 140gr bullets.

My old Remington loves 130 gr. ballistic tips, 56.1 gr H4350 with OAL of 3.499". This is quite a bit longer than standard, but my rifle has a long throat and luckily the magazine will feed it OK. This gives me more case capacity. If you can't seat out that long, this might be an over load in your rifle. I'm getting .75" or so 3 shot groups. Most times it goes right through a deer, even at 400 yards.

This rifle absolutely loved H450. If I would have known it was going out of production I would have bought a bunch. I would regularly get three shots into the threes with that powder.

My current favorite load for my old Husky is a 110 gr TTSX over 63.3 gr of Hunter with a CCI 200 in WW cases.

I was impressed this spring by a 140 gr Accubond pushed by a heavy dose of IMR4831. It hit a decent boar black bear right in the near shoulder joint at 67 yards. The nose and most of the middle portion of the bullet is gone but the jacket and base are intact. The bear dropped at the shot. The bullet didn't exit but impressed me with its toughness.

Another load that I sometimes use out of a bear blind (took a sow a few years ago with it) is a bit odd but very accurate and effective at close range. I use a Woodleigh 180 gr over 53.5 gr of H4831. It chronied 2388fps out of a Rem 700 with a 22" barrel.

I'm partial to a 270 so I play with 'em a good bit.

Shot my 2 favorite loads with the 270 today. 59.0gr of MRP with 150gr Nosler partition at about 3070fps.
Or 58.5gr of RL23 with 140gr Trophy Bonded Tipped at 3050fps. Both loads will be under 1" at a 100yards.
maybe less. Probably going to us the RL23 load because it gets below zero in Canada.

I'm getting good results with a 130 Gr Accubond over 56 gr of IMR 4451. Good 200 yd accuracy in several rifles. I need to chrono it. I'm guessing 3100?

the boys at Krieger Barrels said the 1-10 was gtg with 130's-150's

My current .270 load is 43.2 grains of IMR 4350/CCI 200 pushing a 140 gr. Hornady BTSP. Rocking along at about 2775 out of my A-bolt. I also have had great groups with 55.0 gr. IMR 4350/CCI 200 and the 130 gr. Speer Grand Slam. The same load can be used for the 130 gr. Sierra BTSP, but I'm not a big Sierra fan.

N8dawg6: My Remington 700 Sendero in 270 Winchester just loves the wonderful Nosler 130 grain Ballistic Tip bullets with Federal 210M primers and H4831 SC powder.
This Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet is not just amazingly accurate it is wonderfully lethal on Deer and Antelope size game.
Some threads (like the superb 270 Winchester cartridge!) are to great to die.

I'm curious about this one. Working on a load with the Sierra Tipped GameKings and Reloder 23. Sierra lists a max load of 55.9, but your load is similar to several I have seen with Re 23 and 140s, as well as QL runs that show a max in the high 58 range. Anyone have any experience with this combo? I realize every rifle is different and the need to start low and work up, but this seems like a very large discrepancy.

Hiw many grains in that RL23? 59.5 max in my rifle with 129 lrx.

Youngest daughter's Rem. 700 with a 24" barrel loves Rem. brass, WLR primer and 55gr. of IMR-4350 with just about any 129-130 gr. bullet I've tried. Right now I'm loading the 129gr. Barnes LRX as it's the same bullet my 270 Wthby loves. Both rifles boringly shoot that bullet into sub inch groups.

I've tried IMR-4831, RL-19, H-4831 and IMR-4064, but the above load is the clear winner.

54.5 was a good load for me with 130 Hornady

140 Sierra gets 52 grains of same or 4451- seemed to shoot the same. Both great.

For anything heavier I went to H4831 with pet load being 55.5 for a 150 Hornady.

60 grains H4831, 130 partition. DONE. over 200 big animals over the last 50 years. If a 270 won't shoot that it goes down the road! Deer and elk both.

I use 61gns RL26 and a 140gn Nosler Accubond for 3100fps in my 700CDL .270win. Of all the powders tested during load development RL26 gave the highest velocity followed by RL22 & H1000.

I used both those loads in the 3 270, I own They shot very well in all of them. You do have to watch case capacity

those loads will not work in Federal cases. Also work up to those loads in your rifle. I have 2 257 Roberts one will take much hotter loads than the other.

Try RL26 as it produces good speed with lower pressure.

Is the Sierra a Spitzer or HP?

I found that my Kimber 84L Classic has a tight chamber and a short throat/lead. I started out .050 off the lands with the Barnes 110 TTSX and Hunter ( from my previous work with it in another .270) No good ( 1 1/2 to 1 3/4) so I seated the bullet to the top edge of the first groove ( as many suggest) and 62.5gr Hunter/Nosler cases do 1/2"! I then started the Barnes 129 LRX .070 off the lands, over R16. I could do no better than 1 1/2, even later when I also seated it to the top edge of the first groove. So I left R16 and went to the old Standys, H4350/H4831sc. Bingo! 55.3/H4350/RWS cases BR2 was 1/2", and shot exactly 1" higher than my 110 TTSX, same zero. H4831sc/60.5/RWS cases/BR2 also went into 1/2" and also 1" higher than the 110TTSX and 1/2 inch right. So both work swell! I will chrono them al later on. I go for accuracy first, and then see how fast its going. I'm sure I'm plenty fast, ha.

55.3 grains of RL 17 and a 130 grain fusion gets 3200 FPS out of a Kimber as well as a Fieldcraft. Accuracy is fantastic on both.

57gr RL23 150gr. Ballistic Tip (or Accubond) for 3000fps in a 24" barrel Remington 700

I had been loading 57gr H4831 with the 150s before I got a chronograph. Until I checked, they were only shooting 2750fps. I also had been using 65gr H4831 with a 160gr bullet in my 7mm Rem Mag, and found it only shooting 2925fps. RL23 has that same rifle and bullet shooting 3100fps now. I've switched all these loads from H4831 over to RL23

My rifle is a Win 70 stainless CRF 270 with 24" factory bbl. from the now defunct New Haven , Conn. plant. This load right out of the Barnes manual. Their 24" bbl rifle with Barnes 130gr TSX/TTSX. 59.5 grs of Rel 19 & Federal standard LR primer = 3211 fps. This smoking load was confirmed over my chrono with the same velocity. Sub 1/2" groups in my rifle. I find it out performs far heavier lead core bullets including the partition style. Will take elk cleanly. If deer is what you want then the Barnes 110 gr mono is the way to go.

Me too, a 50 year .270 wcf user. Tried every combo , In my view 150 N.P's are gold, 160's too. Push them from 2800 to 3000,+ and they work on Bull Elk. Many, many Bull elk. I favor RL 26 these days.

QL shows 3054 FPS at 60,458 PSI with RL23 but I was using 140gr Accubonds Sako A7 with 24" barrel.

The 150gr Nosler partition and MRP at 59gr QL shows 3010 FPS at 60,101 PSI Same rifle. Hope this helps.

Are you sure your 140 AB load is H4350? If that from John's article, Handloads that Work, I believe that's a H4831 recipe, using 57gr for 150s, 60gr for 130s and splitting the difference with 140s at 58.5

What worked well in my 50's Model 70 was 130 gr Partitions pushed by 54 g IMR4350.

I only own one .270 Win., and it is a finicky biotch!

Doesn't help that, only after multiple trips to the range, with multiple factory and hand-loaded recipes, I discovered that it won't shoot anything well without at least four or five fouling rounds through a clean barrel.

Having figured that out, I then tried at least a half dozen factory offerings, as well as hand loads with H4831SC, IMR4350, RL-22, IMR7828, IMR4895, and RL-19. Some even showed promise. But, alas, none were consistent.

I was just about to kick this rifle down the road when I stumbled upon some VV N-160 and gave it a whirl. It was a winner, @ 55.0 gr behind 130 gr Hornady Interlock SPs (WW brass, Fed 210 primer). Modest velocity for me at that charge (a little over 3000 fps), but very accurate and very consistent. Vihtavuori lists their max at 58.0 gr [for a 130 gr Remington SP], so there is more room to play, but I'm happy with what I've got.

So, of course, they aren't all easy to load for.

I have had great luck with N560 in my 270 Win with 130 or 110 grain H4831SC with 150's is excellent as well.

Anybody tried the Hornady 145 grain ELD X bullets with R 26?
I have usually shot Partitions in mine with very good results but looking for something different.

I decided to see if I could get 140 gr Hornady BTSP to shoot accurately in my .270 rifles. I found good results in a couple different .270 rifles with 53.5 gr of RL16. I have not yet chronoed it but expect to be close to 3000 fps.

I chronoed it today in 3 different rifles. Average across 3 rifles was around 3040 fps. All barrels were 22" long.

I couldn't get 150 grain partitions to shoot well with any powder. I'm going to use 58 grains of 7828 ssc with the only 150 graner my rifle likes. The 150 speer hot cor. I can get decent accuracy with a 130 grain partition, but deer season is saturday, so i will use the speer.
