Which do you prefer, and why, for your .257 Bob ? I just bought a 760 Remington in .257 Roberts, so I'll need to buy brass. E

I bought 500 new Remington .257 cases a few years ago, and they were pretty darn uniform and held up well in a number of rifles, including a .257 AI.

But when I finally wore them all out last year, I bought a 50-case bag of Remington at a local sporting goods store and they were so soft that they stuck with normal ("book") loads in more than one rifle.

So I bought some Winchester .257 cases and they worked fine with the same loads. Dunno if the softness problem is temporary with Remington .257 brass but....

I prefer the Remingtons. Never had any "softness" issues and all loads are in the "+P" category.

I use both and never had a problem....also the Frontier +P...which I guess are Hornady? I check the H20 grains to top of case to enter into quickload before I come up with a load.

I usually avoid which brass is best discussions but will put my 2 cents in here. To me it is kind of a crap shoot. Over the years starting around 1962 I have used every brand of Roberts brass I could lay my hands on. Pretty much it has boiled down to I have had good service as well as problems with all the brands. Mostly today because I often own more than one 257 at a time I use different brands of brass to make it easier to keep the loads for one rifle seperate from the others. I will say that it is really irritating to buy a large lot of any brand and find that it gives you problems. It happens thus the crap shoot comment.

Is anyone necking down Norma, Lapua or RWS 7x57 brass? Is it worthwhile for a hunting rifle?

I've had the same issue as JB. When I finished my 257 AI I bought a few bags of RP cases of the same lot, a buddy bought me some custom loads using RP cases, and I bought some factory-loade WW +P stuff.

The RP cases I bought as components have held up well, while the ones that came in the custom loads (these were standard Bob loads) have not. The former have had more loadings than the latter, but the latter have had primer pocket issues already.

I haven't loaded the WW +P stuff as much as the RP stuff so I can't comment on that.

Bottom line, RP stuff seems to be hit or miss...

I have tried both, but that has been necked up to use in a 6.5 x 57. Bag of 50 each..

after that, I bought 250 of the Winchester brass..

quality control and uniformity were much better in the Win brass..

Don't ask me why, but I have this theory that Rem and Win both put more quality control on brass made for the competitor's chamberings than they do their own..

I have found better QC in brass for 257 Roberts and 6mm Rem, from Win than I have Remington..

on the flip side, I find better QC on brass for the 243 and 270 and 30/30 coming from Rem..

same with 280 Brass...

call me crazy but that is the pattern I have seen..

yet when it comes to 22.250 brass I go with Rem over Win...

for the 6.5 x 55, and 7 x 57 and 8 x 57 I also use Rem, over Win Brass...

Now Hornady Brass.. that just plain stinks for Q/C
