Bolt rifle, or 99?

When I lived in NH, this is the load that I used in a Remington 760:

BRASS - Winchester/Olin
BULLETS - Remington 170 grain RNCL 30-30
POWDER - H4895, 40 grains
PRIMER - CCI large rifle

I was hunting thick 2nd growth hardwood, mostly beech, birch, maple, and oak with a few woods roads and utility ROWs thrown in. Most shots were within 200 yards, often within 200'. I like the Remington 170 grain 30-30 RNCL bullet because they open a little more quickly at 300 Savage velocities.

I wouldn't use this load in a weaker action, so I'd recommend dropping 5% in an rifle of equal strength and 10% in a rifle of lesser strength/stiffness.

I've had good luck with that load and hornady 150's. The rifle was a rem 722 and I didn't have it long enough to shoot any game with it. That load was very mild and shot 1 moa. Fun little rifle to shoot.

Assuming Passport's rifle is a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage, my deer hunting load which I worked up using 5 different rifle powders, 5 different primers and three different bullets together with various bullet seating depths over a 3 year period, is as follows:

Rifle: 1953 Model 99 Savage (EG) in .300 Savage caliber-24" barrel
Powder: 40.8 grains of H4895 (40.9 grains is a maximum load)
Bullet: 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, boat-tailed bullet
Primer: Standard Winchester large rifle primer
Case: Modified (accurized) Winchester
Muzzle Velocity: 2635 fps (chronographed)
Deviation: � 3 fps (+1 fps/-2 fps)
Accuracy: averaged .75-inch three shot groups @ 100 yards

Note: H4895 is one of Hodgdon's "EXTREME" powders. Hodgdon claims that the muzzle velocity produced by their "Extreme" powders is not effected by air temperatures. I found this claim to be true. Range temperatures varied from 35�F. to 85� F. and average MV's remained around 2635 fps throughout the 50� variation in air temperatures.

Muzzle velocities obtained with the chronograph set up 15 feet from the rifle's muzzle.

Out of my 99, I settled on 40 grains of IMR 4895 and a 150 grain Speer Grand Slam bullet (old style) for 2625 FPS average. This is 1 grain below max according to my older book. It is a 1" load out of my gun.

I tried IMR 4064 as well as IMR 3031 and some Hodgen and Allient powders and a few other bullets (all 150 grain).

I have loaded some for two friends using 99s.

150 Horn SP with 41.0 of IMR4041.

Works great for them.

Did you mean IMR3031 or IMR4064?

4041 is short for single based horse manure just ask JB

IMR4895 with the Sierra 150 SPT, or IMR4320 with the Hornady 150. A caution on the IMR4320/Hornady load: even though it is fine in my 99's I get an occasional pierced primer in the 760 with this.

I stepped in single based horse manure, but meant IMR 4064.
This was just a test.
Also I believe the best thing to do with a 740 or 760 is to bury it in the back yard before failure sets in.

Never seen a 760 fail, but seen lots of 740s and 742s with bad rails that failed regularly.

Only Rem I ever personally owned was a 788.

Better watch myself here. Don't want to be placed in the same crowd as some other nay sayers here. But then, I am a much nicer guy than most -- just misunderstood.

Didn't Remington do a very reasonable swap out for both the 740s and the 760s for the new 7400 and the 7600 replacement???
Maybe it was just the autos that had rail problems.

Anyhow, the 150 Horn SP is brutal on deer chests.

It's RL-15 and 180's for me now. I shot 4064 for years before that.

Ditto on Reloder 15, I have had excellent accuracy and deer killing with 41 grains and 150 grain flat base spitzers. I have tried both Sierra Pro Hunters and Hornady Interlocks and they are equally effective.

Only two loads that I used when I had a 99EG (24" bbl)

150gr Hornady SP
40gr H-4895
WLR primers
R-P hulls
2550 fps

Same as above but;
41gr Ramshot TAC
2660 fps

Both loads shot 1" at 100 yards for three shots.

Does not seem like the 150 and RL-15 are much of a combo? Anyone other than gunner runnig RL-15 with a 150?

I shoot 150 grain bullets with RL15 out of my Rem. 700 Classic. It gives about 2700 fps to start and sub-2" groups at 300 yards for three shots.

Start around 42 grains and work up.

Best load I have for my Rem 722 is with 165 gr. Rem PSP and 44 gr. of R-15. Shoots under an inch and some times a lot less. It is a max load for me so work up..
