I've got a Savage stagger-feed short-action in 308 Win and was wishing to rebarrel it in 284 Win. Has anyone done this? If yes, what is your COAL? Does it feed and stack well? I measured my magazine well and it measures around 2.85", which seems close for the recommended 2.80" COAL for the 284. I wish to shoot 139gr SSTs or 140gr Accubonds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IIRC, somebody did a 7mm-08 to 284 rechamber on a Marlin XS-7. You might do a search on that and see what he has to say, since the Marlin XS-7 and Savage 10/11/12/14/16 short actions are so similar.

I won't speak to the savage, but I have built a 284 on a short action. I used a wyatts box in a M700 SA with length of 2.990.
The 284 is a pretty long case for 2.850 coal. if the chamber/throat is cut to spec you won't get to the lands with the SST or the Hornady 139 interlock. Of course if you smith can cut the throat shorter its no problem. Often you don't need to load near the lands for best accuracy.. but if you do...
sure the 284 can work with a 2.8" box , but its not the most flexible combo.
I know I could chamber the 284 but I afraid I'd be no better off than a 7mm-08 due to seating the bullet so deeply. I'm kinda fond of the 140gr projectiles. Plus if the throat on the chamber is deep I'd have too much bullet jump for my liking. Hopefully someone out there has done the conversion and can help me out. Thanks gentlemen for your input.

I purchased a Savage model 11f in 7-08 and had it rechambered to 284, depending on the type and brand of bullet I can get an Oal of 2.990, mine has a long throat, with that Oal I am .090 off the lands.
I find it interesting that most people look at the 284 as a short action cartridge, which is why it was designed, to produce 270-like performance in the Winchester 88s and 100s, but the same group of "most people" gnerally think of the 6.5x55 as a long action cartridge, even though they share the same case length. Personally, I think that the 284's day pretty much ended when the 270 WSM, 7mm SAUM, and 7mm WSM were introduced, as they fill the same "7mm SA cartridge" niche and offer more speed.

I have a R77 with 20" Shaw in 284 Win that preforms quite well. It is in a long action and therefore I can seat bullets out where they should be and get some really great results. With 160NPs it is a real butt kicker and the 120BT rounds out its performance.
I also acquired a FN action 6x284 that is now chamber in 6.5x284. Another real great performer in a long action.

There are lots of remedies to cure an ill feeding cartridge.
The 284 Winchester has a case body diameter that falls dead center between the standard '08 and '06 parent cartridges and those of the magnum series.
A little tweaking here and there with the feed lips of either your 308 magazine or a WSM magazine should get ya there...
...but if not, a center feed magazine can either be built or bought and that is exactly what I did when going from a 243 Winchester to the 358-WSM... I made a center feed using sheet metal glassed into my original magazine box. It's very robust and feeds flawlessly.
The 284 had short for weight bullets in factory rounds, built a LH Rem 700 on a Std SA mag would not do it again. Limited on bullets that work well. In a 3.0" action makes a lot more sense IMHO.
Took one of my 6.5 Rogue (6.5X55BJAI with 37deg) cartridges and placed it in the magazine. It measured COAL 2.939" and unfortunately the magazine well was only 2.900" so it would not feed into the well. I would have to go with a maximum COAL of 2.870" (no play)if I decide to pursue the 284 Win. What COAL do you guys shoot and with what grain bullet?

Most of my loads run 2.980 to 2.990, my Savage 11f after being rechambered ended up with a long throat, even at 2.990 oal I am still .100 off the lands. Even with being that far off the lands my best groups are just over 1/2 inch, I only use 140 gr bullets, Nosler partitions and Barnes ttsx, RL 17 is my go to powder.
You can do alot of work in the field with a 284 having a COL of original length.
