I was trying to develop a load for my 300wm useing the 180gr. Hornady SST. In refering to the Hornady 8th edition and looking to use IMR 4350. (I use this powder for my 165sst loads) It was not listed in the 8th edition. I referred back to earlier editions to find a load. I called Hornady about this as I noticed that, well.... there top loads seem some what "light" shall we say. They told me that since the powder plant has move back to the US that the recipe turns out a some what faster burn rate than in the past. Has anyone else noticed any change? Has anyone had to adjust there loads due to this. And lastly, What powder charges for IMR 4350 is anyone useing for the 180 and 165grn loads in the 300wm.

Bangflop, my top loads for the 300 Win Mag are also IMR 4350. These loads are maximum, over those shown in most books, powder is from my 8# jug, bought 2011. Standard cautions, use at own risk, work up carefully. Here are loads:

WW cases, Fed 215M primer, 72 gr/ IMR 4350, 180 grain Nosler Partition. 3.375" COAL. 3013 fps in my rifle w/ 24" bbl.

WW cases, Fed 215M primer, 74 gr/IMR 4350, 165 grain Nosler Accubond or Ballistic Tip. 3.375" COAL. Not chronographed, but estimated at 3125 fps.

My COAL is driven by magazine length.

Bang, the last full charge loads I worked up using IMR 4350(older powder) only netted me 2995 avg with a 180 NPT with accuracy I wanted in my ss M700 300 win Mag. My pf M70 same 24" barrel lgth was moving the same 180 NPT's at 3100 fps with RL-22 which I prefer for the 300 Win Mag. They were to hot for the M700 ss and so I worked up a load using IMR 4350 but like I said vel was disapointing. The deer and elk I shot didn't seemed to notice the difference though.IMR 4831 might be a better choice. I will try the newer IMR 4350 myself with some 190 gr Sierras Matchkings to see for my self. With that bullet and CCI 250s I have had excellent results with the new Winchester Supreme 780 (designed for the 300 WSM). Almost 3000 fps in a 24" barrel is done with safety.
A bonus is that unlike any stick powder, even the SC and SSCs, it measures beautifully always +-1/10.
I'm shooting 76 gr in my 300 WinMag R-1 with no drama and 1 MOA for 3 shots.

Don't often shoot that anymore as a 168 TSX will kill anything that walks on this side of the pond and can be pushed to 3150 with 78 gr.

My rifle is a older Remy 700, also with a 24" barrel. It loves Sierra 150 Gk's w/72gr of IMR4350. But I am now looking a longer routine ranges (200 to 500 yards) Thats why I was looking at the 180 SST with a B.C. of .480. I must confess I am a lover of IMR powders, However, I hear more and more folks looking at RE22 for the 300 mag. Would you suggest maybe switching powders? My concern is that with the 24" tube would I gain much velocity over the IMR4350 loads.

The 168 TTSX has a BC of .470. Nothing you shoot will know the difference.

75.0 grs RL 22 180 gr, Federal GM215M primer has produced 3000 fps and sub MOA in 3 different 300 Win Mag rifles.

That was my load also in a Sendero and 700 SS. 75.5g R#22, fed 215, bullet touching the lands, 3050 fps, great accuracy at 200. In the SS sendero, the most accurate bullet I tried was the 180g Winchester soft point...go figure.

Were any of them wearing 24" barrels? If so, sounds like I may need to switch powders!

Shot a few over the crono today. This is what I got:

Hornady 165 SST. 70gr IMR4350 = 3000 fps on the money with .233 groups size at 100 yards

Hornady 180 SST. 68gr IMR4350 = 2810 fps with .740 group size at 100 yards.

I am happy with the results of the 165's But I think you guys are right on the money for the 180's. It needs to be feed a diet of RL-22. I will pick some up Friday and give it a try.

By the way, These loads ar almost exactly 100 FPS slower than what Hornady has listed in the 8th edition. My gun may be just slower.

I always load 75.5grs RE22 with 180s, very accurate load.

That seems to be THE recipe! Will load some Friday and shoot some Saturday. Will report back!

I`ve had good luck lately with Ramshot magnum and magpro in the 300WM..

That RL22 sound good. Anybody tried RL 17? I am trying it on 3 different loads/bullets. Also curious on how far from rifling you are seating your bullets? I have started at .050 off with mixed results. I must admit, the more I get into this handloading, the more variables I can see.

Ok, You RE-22 fans are on the money!
180gr Hornady SST, RE-22 76.0grns, Seated to the cannalure and lightly crimped.

Velocity = 3159 to 3163 every time!

Group was .690 at 100 yards, I believe I have found my load. Very pleased with this.

I also tried the 165 SST with 79.0 grns of RE-22. Speed was impressive (3275) but groups opened up to 2+ inches. I will stick with the IMR4350 for the 165's.

So make it +1 for the re-22

RL-22 works well in my Ed Brown Damara with 180 gr. NBT's.

Edited to add velocity is 3,050 fps.

I never tried SST's, although I use 140 gr. SST's in my 6.5-284.

74.5 grs of RL19 and 180 gr Barnes TTSX BT yields 3055 fps from my Sako 85 .300 Win. mag., and groups 1" at 100 yards.

Barnes recommends a rate of twist of 1-in-11" or faster for this bullet.

Yep, I am with Jim there. 75-76 grains of RL22 with a 180 is a great load. Usually runs in the 2950-3050 range. Plus, they usually seem to be really accurate.

How well does the 180 gr. SST perform on game at around 3000fps? The 150 gr. version at 200 fps less is a heck of a bullet on deer and feral hogs.
