anyone have any pet loads with a 26" barreled 264 win mag and 140gr bergers? thinking of starting with h4350, win brass and win mag primers...gonna be setting it up as a long range rig wearing a huskemaw scope...all suggestions welcome
Posted By: tmax264 Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/23/12
I'm having pretty good luck with 7828 and 140 NBT's.
Posted By: southtexas Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/24/12
IME, if you are looking for accuracy, 4350 is pretty good. If you are looking to get the kind of velocity that a 264WM is supposed to provide, you need a much slower burning powder.
Posted By: fisherman983 Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/24/12
what would you suggest for velocity and accuracy? im new to reloading
Posted By: Freddy Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/24/12
With a 26 inch barrel you should get a least 3100 with any 140 gr bullet. I have not tested 140's in my 264, my pet load is 68 gr of Ramshot magnum with the 120 barnes ttsx.
Posted By: Bill_Davis Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/24/12
7828 and H-1000 are both good for me. Mine is a 26" Krieger 8 twist and 3100+ is no problem.
Posted By: southtexas Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/24/12
Magnum or Magpro should get you 3200, or close to it with 140's
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/25/12
Yeah, along with Retumbo. Between those three, one will usually shoot quite well.
Posted By: Burleyboy Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/25/12
I mostly run 7828 with the 140's. 65g = 3220 fps with a 140 from my 26" remington.

I searched for awhile trying to get 3100+ out of my M70 264 with 140's. Retumbo worked well, but didn't seem super consistent, on a hunch and some good advice I tried RL25 and with 140 BT's and AB's. Well, it turned out to do really well. I end up with about 3180 with both loads, same die settings and everything.

3 shots at 300 with 140 BT's

Overall, I am very happy with how the rifle shoots these and the speed came once the rifle found the charge it liked.

Have you got a pet load for the 130gr bullets as I just ordered 150 of the JLK 130gr VLD bullets. It will take a month to get them as they only run a batch when they get a big enough order.
Posted By: fisherman983 Re: 264 win mag loads - 06/27/12
those are some really nice groups you have there!
Posted By: Burleyboy Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/02/12
I haven't worked with the 130's much in my 264. I tried 130 NAB's from it and it didn't like them. I have some 130 vld hunting's on the bench that I've been shooting in my 6.5x47 L. I'll have to load some over H1000 and I7828 in the 264 and get them to the range.

when working up loads, do you guys do your groups in 3 shot groups or 5?? im brand new to reloading and i just loaded up some rounds using retumbo. i loaded mine up in 5 shot batches. 2 batches shot awsome for 3 shots and blew the 2nd two way out? the two best 3 shot groups were right at .56 and another at .71 suggestions? what should i change? should i play with seating depth, and at what seating depth should i start at? the seating depth i chose was based on the instructions in the nosler book IF i even did it corectly and i believe my c.o.a.l was 3.372 but the load data i got from berger was for 3.40.

130`s RL25
140`s H1000

I would keep with 3 shots for a 264. It heats up the barrel pretty quickly, so I would shoot more groups of 3 shots, rather than trying to get 5 down the tube. It is burning alot of powder behind a small bullet.

What fps are you getting with the 130gr?
Posted By: Tim_in_TN Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/15/12
Very close to 3300 fps. Krieger BBl, 10 t.
Posted By: 264wm Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/16/12
What load data are you using. I need a starting point on the 130 gr bullets. Shilen 30" 1 in 8 twist. Shooting for 3400 +
Posted By: 264wm Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/16/12
Van Zwoll published 129gr Hornady 3423 fps with 26" barrel using 67gr H4831 and 3 shot .8 in group.
Posted By: Popapi Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/17/12
Stepped out and tried some VV N570(70.5grns) as per Bergers data with a 140VLD shows great promising as per accuracy and lighting the chrono up a little over 3200fps(3204fps average)! I'm stoked and will verify this load again on the weekend Lord willing!!!! O yeah NO PRESSURE what so ever in the Broughton 26incher!!!!!
Posted By: beretzs Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/17/12
That load is a screamer! I imagine RL33 and N570 would be very awesome in the 264 with the heavier bullets. 3200 with the 140's is no joke!
Posted By: Popapi Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/17/12
B in TOTALLY freaked me out especially the accuracy! Can't wait to try that load out again. The RL33 suppose to step up velocity as well, which is a good thing being that VV N570 is so expensive and sometimes hard to get......
Posted By: 264wm Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/18/12
What size group? VanZwoll clocked 3346 fps with 140gr Hornady with 73gr of H570 which is not made now. What would be the closest powder to the H570?r His group was not that great at 1.2 inches at 100yrds.
Posted By: Popapi Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/18/12
.656 FOUR shot group 1st 3 where .558! H570 or H870? If it's H870 I scored on 3lbs of that and is shot better, just ran out of light to chrono....

That load is way to hot in my rifle - caution big time. No criticism of Van Zwoll, as I'm sure he was OK with the stuff he used; it just won't work w/ me and mine.
Posted By: 264wm Re: 264 win mag loads - 07/18/12
Everyone needs to use caution when loading hot loads he was using a 26" barrel and has a warning on the article. The H570 was discontinued in the 70's but he did use it.

I found US869 to the powder for my gun. 7828 could match the velocity and accuracy, but case life wasn't good- meaning I had to push it too hard. Found pressure too soon with Rl25 magnum and the other usual suspects. Never seen N570, but would be interested.
And you should be able to hit 3400 with that 30 inch barrel and 130 accubonds. I'm getting 3375 just fine in my 27.5 incher

I am liking those numbers and can hardly wait for the 130's to get here I will be getting a crono soon also.
