Have some 105s on the way for my Stevens 200 243 w/1-9 1/4" twist which Hornady recommends. I have the 85 gr. Partitions shooting fine with H4350 but want a bullet for a windy Montana antelope hunt. I'm sure I'll need a slow powder and have RL 22 and 4831 on hand. Any ideas?
Posted By: Sask_Hunter Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/02/12
RL 17 is what I'm using in a 243. I get 3075 with good accuracy with both hornady 105s. They shot better with a slight jump in that vanguard. Lapua brass and win LR primers.

H1000 and Retumbo would be worth trying

The .243 and 105 A-Max's are a fun combo! I'd also recommend giving Retumbo a try:

I miss the old 105 grain Speers...

but I have like 3 boxes.. so that is a lifetime supply for my needs...

I'm very interested in this also. Right now I'm working on ladder test with Winchester Supreme 780. Started at 44gr. And worked my way up to 48.5gr. In .5gr steps. At 350 yards 46.5gr to 48.5 showed only 2" of vertical. Where .5gr difference was jumping around 4" on loads below 46gr. I just loaded up 16 more in .2gr steps so another trip to the range is in order. I still need to pick up a chrono but the speed seems to be there. Max load of 780 was hitting quite a bit higher than Nosler's factory 85gr. Partition load at a stated 3250 fps.

'17 and '22 both work but '22's load density give me better es and accuracy.

Blood, what's your difference in speed between '17 and '22?

I might have to try some H-1000 with this combo as well.
Posted By: Tanner Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/03/12
Retumbo and the mag primer of your choice. My load did 3030fps out of a 24" tube.

Probably 40-50fps favoring '17 but '22 gets the accuracy nod.

I just picked up a couple boxes of 105s also. I got some A-Maxs and some Speer Hot Core 105s and Speer SPs.
I was thinking of just sticking with my H4350. what has been your experience with 4350 & 105s?
Posted By: Jordan Smith Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/05/12
Excellent results with IMR4350 and the 105AM in my .243...

What is your load bud?

41.0gr of 17, always work up.

I wanna give the 105 AMax's a run in my son's 243. I think it would be a super load to let him stretch it out some and probably shoot just as well as the 7mm Mag's.. I have seen the 105AM shoot some incredible groups at 600.

How well would this 105 AMax do on Mountain Goat? My buddy drew one of the two tags in the Bitteroot Valley and will be taking my 243 out west for me on his retun from beautiful NJ. He has been scouting and thinks the shot will be over 300 yds. I think I just answered my question.
Posted By: deg967 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/19/12
Let me know if he needs more. I've got at least 1box of 50 and no .243.
Posted By: seven_miller Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/20/12
I think that my Stevens 200 has decided it likes 43 grains of ramshot hunter for about 2950 fps. Retumbo gets me more speed but doesn't group as tight.
Posted By: beretzs Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/20/12
Man, I will have to check out some Hunter and I still have a bit of Retumbo left for the 243 as well. Might have to pick up some 105's when I get home.
Posted By: Dusty246 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/24/12
Finally got to the range and chronied some 105s w/H4831 SC, Hornady cases, CCI 200s and got a five shot average of 3123 fps with a flattend primers but no hard bolt lift or other signs on the cases. 22" barrel. Didn't shoot for accuracy as I had 2 emergency plumbing calls as soon as I set up on the bench and had to leave. Typical.
Posted By: beretzs Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/24/12
Man, that is SCREAMING! Wow.. I will have to put H4831 on the list of powders to try with the 105.
Posted By: Dusty246 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/24/12
I just did the Hornady Ballistics Calculator and this little gun is a cannon, 1153 Ft. lbs at 500 yds is amazing. I was shocked at the speeds I got.
Posted By: ALLongshot Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 08/29/12
Anyone have experience with 105 AMaxs and whitetails??
Posted By: Dusty246 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/02/12
Thinking this load of H4831 at 3123fps w/105s is a bit hot as even tho I had no issues with a sticky bolt, the primers are flat, and 2 out of ten cases had ejector marks, and the cases stretched .005 at the web. These loads are 123 fps faster than the new Hornady manual. Any thoughts, I have 6 weeks till take off to my buddie's cabin in Hamilton MT. so I have time to test.
Posted By: Tanner Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/02/12
I would really give Retumbo a try. Start around 46-47gr and run a mag primer. It kicked ass when I used that combo.
Posted By: Dusty246 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/02/12
Local shop has some on the shelf. I'll give it a try, thanx.
Posted By: Tanner Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/02/12
i think you'll be pleased with what you see. It seems a little goofy, I know, but the results I saw weren't at all. Good speed (3030fps, 24" barrel), and nice consistency on the chrony. It was fun, no doubt.
Posted By: Dusty246 Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/02/12
I'll throw a few thru the chronie and see what the 22" will do this week.
Posted By: Jordan Smith Re: 243 with 105 AMax - 09/03/12
41.5gr of IMR4350 shoots lights out in my rifle, and would be worth working up to.

who pissed in your corn flakes this morning?

you dig up a 3 year old post, just to post this?

Slow day at church.... you that bored....and you were done choking your chicken and still had time on your hands...

and I STILL like 105 grain Speers.... and don't need a BC of .500 to take a damned blacktail at 200 yds or under...

GFY and have a good day doing so...

Sheesh...what a putz..

I have been shooting 105berger hybrids for over a year. Using 41 grains of h 4350. Chronos at 2950, and shoots extremely tight. A good 105 bullet would work fine on the goat hunt mentioned above. I've killed lots of critters from Deer to coyotes to antelope with mine.
