has anyone tried any of the Barnes bullets in their 338-06?

I have a 338-06 AI, looking for a bullet that will work on whitetail deer & black bears, farthest shot probably 150 yards.

I would like to try the 210 nosler partition or 200 Combined Technology, but availability has been sketchy so I figure maybe time to give the TTSX a try.

do you guys think a 160grain ttsx at about 3000fps (hopefully more) will do the trick on bear & deer? or should I bump to the 185, or 210's?

you have NO wrong answer with any of the Barnes Bullets you mention....especially with whitetails...

with the 200 you'd be set for anything in the lower 48 and much of what Alaska has to challenge a hunter...

I'm using the 160 TTSX in my AI which has speed, excellent accuracy and is remarkably flat shooting out to 300 yds for its humble .342 BC.

One of the guys on the forum used the 160 TTSX in his 338 Federal on all his African plains game and one elk. Worked very well. You should have no problems with even more speed.

I took a pretty good sized bull elk in 2006 using the 185 gr TSX in my 338-06 running right at 2950 fps at just shy of 300 yards and he just dropped at the shot. The bullet was recovered after thumping both shoulders and losing all petals. For your needs, clearly a simple killer.

What speed is it running? Barnes has max load from the 338 federal with the 160 TTSX at 3089 and I have loaded some with less powder than there max to work up and hoping to get in the 3000fps range from a 18 inch barrel.

I ordered a box of 165s and 185's from powder valley today, I figure see which groups the best and then I will order a few more boxes and be set for a while.

thanks for the input, also makes me glad to hear they are good on elk just in case I draw a PA elk tag this year

The 160 TTSX at 3050ish is very impressive! I'm also have a 338-06, and for that I'd probably go 185 because you should be able to get the speeds up to where the TTSX really shines. Great penetration and not too much meat damage. You should be able to get well over 3100, or perhap hit 3200 with yours shooting the 160. I think you'll be impressed with the damage that does. It will really mess some meat up too though.
