I'm loading Hornady 500gr DGS bullets & the manual says col of 3.31.
But if I load them to that length it is well short of the cannelure.
Does this seem correct? Because for me to get to the cannelure the col is more like 3.21.

And yes the case are new Hornady trimmed to length

Have you made sure they worked in your rifle?

If they do I would not worry about the COL.

The funny thing is my rifle won't be here till Monday. A Ruger no 1.
Hornady manuals are usually pretty accurate. Just wondering if it's a mid print. I'll try and call Hornady Monday.

Wait until your rifle shows up then see if the cartridges chamber.

I never used the COAL listed in the manuals,I just keep seating the bullet until it chambers in the rifle.

On a number 1, who cares about cannelure? My No. 1 .458 had enough throat to load to Lott length.

That's what I figured. But like I said Hornady is usually spot on with they're col matching the cannelure with all calibers.
Wondering what's up with it. What if it wasn't a single shot.
Pretty hard to put a good crimp on it when your not hitting the cannelure.

Then you seat the bullet to the cannelure and crimp.

Get a Lee Factory Crimp die and set the OAL wherever you like and crimp.

I have a Lee factory crimp die. But with a 458 I would think you would want to crimp the bullet on the cannelure for a good solid hold.
I'm just going to go with a col of 3.21 and see what happens.

Well I feel like an idiot, maybe lol.
The bullets aren't 500gr. DGS. They are the 480gr. DGS bullets.
So I'm wondering if their is that big of a difference in cannelure positions between the two bullets?
I only have the Hornady 8th edition manual and it doesn't show the 480gr bullet in it. Does anyone have the 9th edition and can check on this for me.
All so I just loaded some dummy rounds to set my dies but I'm wondering about powder selection. I have plenty of Varget to use but I've been reading that H335 is the go to powder for the 458win.
Any info would be appreciated.
Edit
Well I did more research and found Hornady lists the 480gr for the 450 nitro express in loaded ammo.

The Lee die can make its' own cannelure.

335 gives a huge muzzle flash and lots of blast. It was accurate for me but I had better luck with 4198 and a couple of the AA powders as far as velocity and lessened blast go.
