What have you found to be the best load and powder for 165 and 180gr Noslers? I'm having a Model 70 SS classic built with a 1-10" Hart 24" barrel with the intent of using it on my NM elk hunt this year.

Mine is short throated and has to be loaded a little milder than some 300WSM.If I try to push it too much, the groups just open up.I've just been shooting 165gr bullets in mine. These loads have worked well for me.
69.0grs Reloader-22 (3030fps)
65.0grs IMR-4350 (3010fps)
64.5grs Win 760 (3100fps)
67.0grs Hunter (3080fps)

RL 15 with 165's and H 4831 sc with 180's worked for me in the past.

Tag.

Just picked a box of 165 NPT's for use with RL-17 and H-4350. Will report back.

Rl17 and H4831SC both worked about the best for me and my last 300 WSM

17 and 19 have been the best for me with 165's and 180's

With 180s, H4350, H4831sc and Hunter have been good for me.

I only run 180's in the 300 WSM, so having said that, my two all-time favorite loads in a variety of 300 WSM's with that bullet weight:

64.0 H4350 - 2,980 fps
64.5 RL17 - 3,030 fps

Like Brad, I've used a lot of H4350 with 180gr. nosler partitions, but have also used IMR4350 as well:

Before I made the switch to 180gr. partitions, I ran the 165gr. Hornady btsp interlocks and they did very well at any range...:

Thanks everybody. I have extensive reloading knowledge of other calibers but have decided the 300WSM may become my primary hunting rifle for a multitude of reasons. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the enduron powders. Guess they are loosing momentum. Has anybody shot a bull elk with a 150gr accubond out of the 300WSM

If I'm going to shoot a 150gr, it will be with my 270win.... wink

We have used the 160 7mm and 165 308 Accubonds quite a bit. I'd be okay with the 150's but probably a little happier with the 165's if it were mine. They can still be run fast.

A few of us that answered don't have a 300 WSM anymore, me included but I'm looking to get back into one this year. I don't think the Enduron powders are loosing popularity, they are just new and not too many are using them yet. IMR 4451 and 4955 would be top choices for the 300 WSM and IMR 7977 looks great for the heavy bullets. I have all three and plan on trying them. If you are looking at 150's IMR 4166 looks pretty good as well.

Not a wsm, but I killed a huge cow elk 3 years ago w/ a 150g AB out of a 28.5 " .300 WM. At about 3500fps it performed perfectly on about a 200- 250 yard shot.. The cow dropped right there.. My biggest problem was loading her.. looking back I have shot quite a few elk w/ AB's.. Their performance has been flawless !

No nosler, but a 168 TTSX launched by h4831sc has done great.

Have you considered the Hornady SST. This is a excellent bullet for elk and deer. I have used them for 17 years and harvested animals at 440 yards. Just a idea ,Ron

Mine shoots 200 gr Hornady ELD-X's VERY well. Much better than I ever got it to shoot 180's. Off hand I don't recall the exact load, but it is near, or at a max load of H4350. I got 2800 fps IIRC.

This is a new bullet without a lot of field reports on it. But from what I've read it does fine as long as impact velocity is under 3000 fps.

RL 19 then H4350
Posted By: Gasman Re: 300WSM - 05/07/17
In my rifle, 65.0 grains of H4350 produces just under 3000 fps out of a 24" 1:10 barrel and fine accuracy. 180 AB's seated to kiss the lands, Norma brass, WLR primers.
