Picking up a ANIB 700 LTR and wondering how many of you shoot a .308 light bullet load to zap coyotes and groundhogs?

Got a box of Hornady TAP 110s around, but wonder if any of you guys have favorite handloads.

No, I'm not worried about coyote fur.

Get some Speer 125 gr. TNTs and load over 49.5 grs. of Win 748. I found that going with a half grain more powder didn't make it run any faster and opened groups. This load runs about 3077 ft/sec. from a 24 inch barrel and drills tiny five shot groups. Since the bullets are short, you end up with a loaded round measuring 2.765 inches or so to gain adequate case neck support. The longer 125 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip can be seated out further. Sierra 125s are also pretty accurate.

Thanks JStor. Guess not too many folks are doing this?

If someone knows where an earlier thread on this point me to it. My search fu ain't working...

Cold Case - I've used my .308 as a varminter quite often, with different bullets. That 110 gr TAP ammo shot pretty well from my .308 BTW. Sierra's stubby little 110 gr hollow point bullet over BLC(2) has worked well for me. Not the best long-range bullet, but accurate and has good splat factor on varmints.

The old Speer 130 grain hollow point works very well too. I save my Varget for 150 - 175 grain bullets.

I used 125 gr Sierras in my .30-06 with IMR-4064, but haven't tried varmint loads in my .308 since I use .223s, a .22-250 or a .243 for varmints now.

I have shot the 125-130g bullet with 49.5-52.0g of 748 with a Fed 210 primer in several rifles.

Accuracy is usually a single ragged hole, no kidding!

The nosler Ballistic tips and the No longer made, sierra 135g Single shot pistol bullet were my favorites.

Today, the TNT would be my first pick for splatter'en yotes.

I use the Sierra 110gr Varminter HP in a light load .308 - it's very accurate and shoots to same POA as the 150gr partitions I use for hunting.

Wylie, what is the load data, performance specs and barrel/firearm?
