I've been using H335 in my Cooper .204 with excellent accuracy(in the .2-.3's) using Berger 40gr bullets. I've heard some talk that guys don't like H335 and prefer TAC powder. I'd like to know why the dislike for H335. I've heard TAC is a cleaner burning powder. Is that the only advantage? My groups don't warrant any change but I am down on my H335 supply so thought I might try some TAC if I get good info. Any constructive feedback is welcome.

Tac shoots fine. The data is not as well-developed yet as H 335 (I tried it, liked other powders better), but I have worked up a couple of loads for it without any major issues.
One thing, given you are shooting 40s, maybe you would be better off trying not just a pound of TAC, but also X-Terminator. Both are ball powders, both fairly clean.

Along with being cleaner-burning than H335 (MUCH cleaner, in my experience) TAC also contains a de-coppering agent, because it was originally developed as a powder for full-auto military arms. Accuracy is usually very good with TAC, but I use a lot of it in varmint rifles partly because I don't have to clean barrels nearly as often as when loading traditional ball powders like 335.

Absolutely.. I've got a very good load for 50's with 335 in my .223, and just as accurate of a load with TAC.. But compared to TAC, 335 makes my barrel look like the exhaust pipe on a diesel truck.

TAC wins.

I appreciate TAC for its clean burn value and it also seems to be more temperature tolerant than 335. I found that I could get accuracy equal to 335 with TAC and usually within about 1/2 gr of what my favorite load for 335 was. Another plus is TAC is usually a little cheaper.

And it's not even a close call.

It's not like 335 is poison.. Shoot it up and then move on to TAC.

In my 22 1/2", 8 twist rifle using WW brass, CCI400's and sans moly I got the following:

25.5 = 2970 fps
26.0 = 3020 fps and stupid small groups, as in 0.4" or so at 100 yards.
26.5 = 3090 fps but groups were a bit larger and pressures had to be getting up.

With the 26.0 grain load, primer pockets lasted forever so I called it load complete. That load, in your rifle, may of course blow your ass up so be sure to work up! grin

Where is the best place to buy TAC? Can't get it locally.
Posted By: Nail Re: H335 vs. TAC powders? - 04/24/11
I'd go with Powder Valley or Mid-South Shooters Supply.

Midway tried to charge me a Hazmat fee for primers and another for powder on the same order so I quit getting it from there.

Haha will do. I can't make my mind up on which to try confused I'll be shooting a real similar setup. 23in barrel, 8" twist, and moly but with lapua brass. Hoping to get >3000fps with the setup. I'll get on powder valley and grab a pound or 2 of TAC.

Thanks

Wellll.....FWIW some idiot named Larry talked me into shooting H335 in my .223AI...sure enough it was a tad better than my "go to" IMR 4895. 28.5 grains behind a 50 grain bullet.
And some other dude here on the fire named JB got me going on TAC in my .223... my rifles like a minimal charge of 24 grains of TAC behind a 55 gr. Hornady for high volume gopher shooting ( 2 rifles like the same load grin )

So the bottom line with powders, like rifles...is that I'm a slut....

Don't think so; I have always said if you're gonna go dirty, might as well 2230.
Posted By: ingwe Re: H335 vs. TAC powders? - 04/25/11
Shot a pile of 2230 years ago...seemed OK, but I'm old and my memory is selective.... grin
Posted By: HawkI Re: H335 vs. TAC powders? - 04/25/11
Never guess what bullet I tried in the Sako today.....you're gonna schit!

The first 2230 I used was 8 pounds of "MR-223". The stuff shot great, but I really think whatever source makes it now has a definite winner.
Posted By: Brett_Mc Re: H335 vs. TAC powders? - 04/25/11
Well now ingwe has me all confused... maybe 1 of each TAC and 335.

Have you ran those 50s over the chrono ingwe?
Posted By: ingwe Re: H335 vs. TAC powders? - 04/25/11
Brett- I have not yet, and can only guess at this stage but by the trajectory and past experience they are 3500 fps or so...

6 BR where the H335 and AA2230 really shines with the 55g-70g bullets.
