Folks

Im just going to throw this out there....
Situation - I have just started to pick up reloading equipment and I am also reading some books on the subject as well. I am going to be reloading for an AR15 as well as an AR10 that I am currently building. According to the literature that I am reading as well as some research on the internet the .284 / 7mm has some excellent ballistic characteristics. So of course my brain starts to fire off the thought of building my AR10 around the .284 / 7mm round. So I started doing some research into that thought. Here are some questions that I am running into though.
Questions –
I’m gathering that the caliber will fit in an AR10 platform but will it fit an 180 grain Berger Hybrid? Or am I going to run into length issues? Or any other issue that I’m not foreseeing.
Does anyone on this forum have something like this?
The Berger Manual states a COAL of 2.800 from SAMMI. Is that going to bring down the level of performance if I seat it at that length and not at a longer length.
I appreciate any feedback. Thanks folks!

Pete

If you want an AR in one of the 7mm cartridges, I think your best bet is to go with 7mm-08. Once that's settled you may want to rethink your bullet choice. A 180 is simply too much bullet for the 7-08, at least in my way of looking at it. A 140 or 150 would be more like it.

A 120 TSX is an excellent bullet in a 7mm08 and will kill anything the cartridge is appropriate for.

Welcome to the 'Fire Commtech, let me suggest that you ask the same question on the "AR & Tactical Rifles" subforum, lots of guys with AR10 experience.

But my $.02 is that you'll have a lot less grief with the 7mm-08 than the .284 in an AR. Not sayin' it can't be done, just sayin' the 7-08 is easy.

I have dpms/cmmg "ar10s" in 243/6mmX/260/308. I think the 260 is the best compromise and its what I shoot in tactical competitions. Our monthly match only goes to 550 so I shoot the 123 amax and it does well.
