I'm having trouble getting accurate 17 Rem measurements using the Hornady OAL gauge/threaded cases/comparator/inserts. With older Berger MT HP 25's, I'm getting measurements between 1.870 and 1.940. Hornady 25 HP's are also giving me fits. I'm being very careful with my inner rod "pushing" method.

I'm ready to try the split neck method. I'm confused as to how you guys measure base to ogive with this method though. It seems to me the comparator would push the bullet further into the case mouth when measuring????

If it does, bend in the split neck a bit for a little more tension. Go easy with the comparator and it will work. Measure several times and average.

I use a stoney point a.k.a. hornady OAL this is my method.

Tap the rod until the bullet does not come out with the case. Tilt the rifle up and give it a good slap on the underside of the stock, if the bullet drops then you have the lands.
If you have to tap it out with a rod, you are jammed.
If it falls out on its own you arent quite there.
