I have the germ of an idea.....

I don't want to hear " you should do_____________ this instead"...

I want to know if a 6x45 would be a good pig/varmint rifle.

Thanks in advance for your usual on-point cooperation. grin
Posted By: arkrunner Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/14/16
I've had one for 3 years. Sako 461 Kids have killed 3 deer so far easy to load not picky on powder I put 70 gr SP in an they worked well so far.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/14/16
Which 70 grainer do you like?
Ingwe: Many years ago I pondered the 6x45 vs. 6x47 - I ended up buying a new Remington 40XB-BRKS in caliber 6x47 - it is THE most accurate factory Rifle I have ever owned!
And I have owned a lot of them.
"You should do the 6x47 instead"!
I have shot all manner of Colony Varmints with my 6x47 and it's superb at that - never Hunted pigs with it.
Best of luck with whichever you choose.

I've shot over 100 head of stuff with mine ingwe including deer.

Greg, whats your bullet of choice?

I'm watching this thread. I've been interested in a new 6mm for a while and am not sure in what direction to go.

Par for the course. EVERY time someone says "Not this, not that, don't want..." some body says "you should get... you really need to...". Happens every time.

The 6X45 or sometimes called the 6x223 is one of only a hand full of non-standard calibers that interests me. I am seriously considering getting an upper in 6X45.
There are a fair number of folks using the 6X45 over on predator masters. You should be able to obtain some good info there.
Good Luck

BTW: IIRC there is a guy "yellowhammer" that shoots a lot of pigs/hogs with the 6X45 on that site.

Is that legal?

Or ethical?

in my latest reorganization, I started using a 223 for deer instead of my illegal/unethical 222 rem.

I converted the 222 into a 6x45 for my daughter's deer rifle.

I can't see how one would suck, properly twisted.

Exactly. Only .22 centerfires are illegal and unethical for deer.....

I figured if I do this thing it'll be a tight twist, I aint building it around a single bullet or a single place to use it.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
Another thing .....is forming the brass what I think?

just run it through the sizing die?
Posted By: RWE Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
yes.

I also found a use for all that old & questionable powder I've gotten over the years, using it to fireform brass.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
THX! And a previous poster says TAC is a good choice in this one. My deuce and my .223AI both prefer TAC for their TTSX loads....sooooo Im GTG on that part.

But understand I only use the TTSX in the centerfire .22s on small game...anything else would be unethical, and illegal in most states.... whistle
Posted By: RWE Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
I'm using H322 still, and probably will continue to do so.

Although I acquired 2# of varget I need to do something with...
Posted By: gzig5 Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
What action would you put it in? I've been thinking about one on my spare Sako L461 but the available mag length limits the bullet selection and seating depth a bit compared to a standard short action.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
It would either be a Rem Model Seven ( most likely candidate) or a Rem M700....
Posted By: erich Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
I've had one on a Rem 600 for close to 20 years now. I used it for many years for coyotes but it is so accurate that I pretty much save it for those time I need a lot of accuracy. Coyotes now fall to my 6mm-204 (6x47 Improved), 6.5x58R, 22 Highpower and 22-250.

Yes it is as simple as running them through the FL sizer and load them up, a lot of HP for very little powder Benchmark, H-335 and 748.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
Thanks Erich, thats what I wanted to hear..

Now for all of you guys, what twist? Im thinking 1 in 8 or 1 in 9???

Posted By: erich Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
Mine is a 1-10, I figure there just wasn't enough room in the case to push anything over an 85gr NPT.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
Good point and the NPY will do it all!
Posted By: gzig5 Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/15/16
Unless you plan on running the 100+gr match/VLD bullets, a 10 twist should get it done. An inch or two faster doesn't hurt anything though.
Posted By: pointer Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/16/16
Boxer/Big Stick calls his a "270" so you may want to tread lightly... wink

He's posted some info on his using heavy, VLDish bullets.

With the new rifle rules here in IN I'd love to have one for the boys to use. However, money and time dictate that, for now, they'll probably get a 243 that I'll load appropriately for them. Need to find some Blue Dot or STEEL...
Posted By: Dude270 Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/16/16
Ingwe,

Ive had couple and really like them. If starting from scratch I'd do an 8 twist finished at 20".
The one I have now is so configured and 3000 fps with 70 grain bullets and 2750 to 2800 with 80 to 87 grain bullets is the norm. The great thing about the little round is that at those speeds most any bullet acts like a big game bullet.
70 nosler BT's are pretty stout at that speed but my favorite big game bullet is the 85 sierra gameking

Benchmark, '335 and Tac are where its at for those weight bullets

1 in 8", but you knew that already.
Posted By: ingwe Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/16/16
Good info Dude..thanks!

mathman-yep, I figured on the 1 in 8

My 21" TCU shot thru 85 BTHP well, 12 ROT.

If I did another, I would not do a TCU, but a 45 straight, 8 T is a given on any 6 or 6.5 I build.

55s for PDs
70 TNT or similar for Yotes (yes, dumped a few deer in a 243 and BR - neck and lung shots)
90 or 85 BTHP GK, or Hornady 87 SP/HP for deer thru 250-300 with shot placement.

Beyond that, 105 Amax or similar.

The 45 and similar rounds are sleepers, especially if not hampered by slow twist, as many know.

Enjoy. Great thing, much free brass to be had....and a bore life that might last a lifetime. Mild report and thump.
Put a 6x45, aka 6mm-223, Shaw barrel on what was a .223 Savage Axis rifle late last year. Gent I shoot with at range gave me a set of Hornady dies for the 6x45 cartridge.

I do enjoy shooting my 6x45. Very happy with its accuracy. As mentioned, Ramshot TAC does well in the cartridge, but if you ask Western/Accurate/Ramshot for TAC 6x45 load data....you'll be told TAC is too slow for the 6X45 and use what they list. Least ways, what happened to me. IMR8208 has done well for me too. But then, many of the powders recommended for the .223 cartridge should perform well in the 6x45 with the correct charge.

What bullet for hunting? Sorry, I just shoot paper. But do know the Nosler 70 gr Varmegeddon 6mm bullet shoots well for me when it comes to accuracy. But then, I've tried a variety of bullets, up to 105 grain, with decent accuracy that would be good enough for hunting.

Was out shooting my 6x45 today, shooting H335 85 grain Sierra game kings out of its 22" Benchmark 8T barrel.
I just screwed this barrel on a few weeks ago and I love it.
Remington 700 wearing a McMillan stock
Gonna use it this year for deer now that Indiana is coming up to the 21st century in weapon allowance.
I love being able to see my hits through my scope with a 6mm pill

Greg, whats your load with TAC?

I got my 6x45 folder out. You asked...grin...

80 grain Remington SP maxed at 26.6 h4895 at 2,790...

80 Winchester SP maxed at 26.0 h335 at 2,700...

75 vmax maxed at 27.7 H335 at 2,940 (super accurate)...

75 vmax maxed at 28.0 TAC at 2,900 (super accurate)...

80 ttsx maxed at 26.0 H335 at 2,670...

85 Sierra Gk HP maxed at 25.8 H335 at 2,700 (killed lots of stuff with this load).

That's enough for now....

21" tube.H4895 is good in the 6x45 too...

For an all around load, I would probably settle on the 95 grain Berger vld at 2,600 or so but the 85 sgk at 2,700 is a penetrating SOB with a mattress BC. Never recovered a bullet at these speeds on a broadside'ish shot...

That should be a dandy for Hoosier deer! If I wasn't so broke that's what my oldest would be shooting this year. Him being left handed makes used donors hard to track down in this state...

Typo above, I meant to add, NBT by the 90gr rec on deer.

The 95 NBT is a fave of mine in BR thru 243. The 90 is proven as well.

Either, started around 2700, is about where a 243 is at 150 yds or so. I figure a x45 will easily take deer at 250-300 yds with shot placement, and they should shoot plenty well to that distance with a little dope with a 200 zero.

I shredded both lungs in a deer at 200 with a 70 TNT via BR, granted they start around 3300-3400. My TCU did 3100, but those bullets will positively expand as speeds slow, as will say the SGK or 87 Hornady's. The NBT might be a tad tougher in those larger weights.

Ok.....

Im a fan of the 95 NBT and have wondered about the 90...

Also there is a 90 Accubomb IIRC....
Posted By: 65BR Re: OK: tell me about a 6x45 - 06/20/16
Now that AB would be sweet! Good reminder.

FYI, had a Dr. friend who apparently hammered antelope with little 70 NBTs and WAY yonder, as in over 400-500 yds in New Mexico. Short bbl 243....as he used a slow twist take off BR bbl so they all work when threaded properly, thru lungs etc.

The case capacity and OAL confine would make me look hard at a good pill in the 85-90 range for trajectory and expansion. Plenty retained energy, and weight after impact.

You will do well I have no doubt. As you discuss UL fishing, many folks use way too much gear....and gun.

That's pretty interesting....

Those number look almost exactly what you get out of a 243, with those individual bullet weights with 20 to 22 grains of Blue Dot.

But then the 6 x 45 has a cool factor to it...

I occasionally check out the cartridge, thinking about it...

I have tons of 223 brass ( courtesy of OSP ) and I like the numbers given with H 322, which I have plenty of... that and numbers with AR Comp....

but I'm a bolt action guy...something the size of a Ruger American Predator, without their stupid magazine.... or a Howa Mini in that size rebarreled to the 6 x 45 would make a darn good truck gun....
