I bought this sweet little Stainless Remington Mountain Rifle recently on a whim to see if my 13 yo. would like it. He loves the feel of it but doesn’t shoot it well as I believe it is too light for him. We took it to the range along with some other rifles this weekend and shot approx. 11 rounds of Federal 150’s through it. I fired a sighter to make sure it was on target, did a quick scope adjustment and let him shoot a few rounds. His grouping didn’t look great so I fired a quick 3-shot group to see what was up. My 3-shot group was .86 and fell in the same 1.5” high as my adjusted sighter shot. If I would’ve been shooting at the same dot as my second shot after clicking up to 1.5 high my 4-shot group would’ve still been .86 as it was dead on. His groups were 2.75-3”ish as he’s used to some heavier guns with longer barrels etc.. He has access to several other heavier rifles and appears to shoot them better so he’s not enamored w/ this .308. Shows to be a Sub-MOA shooter in my only group with it firing the cheapest ammo I could find to test in it. (Bonus - .308 appears to be the most readily available factory ammo caliber as I had my choice of 10 different loads between the 2 stores I looked at.
It has an as-new Leupold Vx3i 3.5-10x40 scope w/ CDS (I checked and the free dial is still available). I’m not familiar with the brand/type of base and rings but they appear to do the job. The B&C stock has aluminum bedding block, a Decelerator pad and a nice cheekpiece. The build date code shows 2013. There is hardly a mark on this gun so the previous owner likely never hunted it. Pics available later as I’m not where the gun is. I can see why these guns are highly sought after!

Alternately, would your son shoot the rifle better with lighter bullets? The 130 gr. TTSX combined with wearing a Caldwell Super Mag Plus at the range really tames my Model 7 .308.

I’ll bet by the time he’s in senior high he’d be glad if you kept it. Only if it fits him as good as you say. Those rifles do fit me like a glove. This is a good deal though.
A little more range time, possibly a trigger tune-up, and he would be shooting the mountain rifle just like Dad

Ok. I was just wondering if the extra recoil from the lighter rifle was the cause of the issue. I remember well being terrified of recoil at that age.

You should do that. I have one of these in 7mm-08 and it is an awesome little rifle- done two Caribou hunts, three for Kodiak Blacktail, all sorts of whitetails in the southeast... Since I picked mine up in '15, I've owned a bunch of different rifles but somehow it's the one I keep taking on all my trips out west. Plus, these are literally not possible to replace.

Sweet gun, my dad and I have been looking for a pair of these in 7mm-08.
Just about the best carrying gun out there.... Short of an expensive custom like an Ultra Light Arms or similar.
This 308 was pretty tempting...enjoy it.

Your son just needs more range time with the .308. Lightweight rifles require much greater attention to form and trigger pull than heavier rifles. It takes more force to move a heavier rifle, and much less force to move a lightweight. Even your heartbeat exaggerates the movement of a lightweight rifle vs. heavy rifle. Your son will need to learn better shooting technique to be successful with the .308. It will come, and in doing so will make him a much better marksman. So don't give up. Lightweight rifles are harder to shoot well, but the journey is worth it.

Keith - couldn’t agree more. It’s a good reason to have him practice more and become acquainted with it so his groups improve. I have had Montana’s and other light rifles but have also preferred a little more heft in a rifle. I shoot the lightweights ok from the bench but feel like I may struggle in a good November wind back home in ND or MT.
I’m not familiar with Mr. Phelps or his music but will check into it. The only singer(s) of note that I know of from Tomball are the Eli Young Band.
